THE
E-TIME CAPSULE
1991 to 2000
Name: Ralph
Age: 35
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
The decade my car windshield
was broken by flying rocks 15 times on Denver's roads.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Hopefully, the terrific
traffic jams will be eliminated.
Name: Nancy C.
Age: 39
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
When they moved Elitches, it felt like the end of my world.
But, now I love going to the new park and also Ocean Journey.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Basically, same as
now, only more complicated.
Name: Andrew
Age: 34
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
As a third generation Denverite, I am amazed at how quickly
Denver's prosperity has grown. I believe that during the '90s a
shared vision between the citizens and their elected leaders
forced us as a community to implement a plan that has now made
Denver a city second to none!
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
The challenge for the future of Denver is to sustain its
quality of life through managing its growth. In 2020, more than 1
million new residents are predicted to live in the Denver metro
area -- more classrooms, improved transportation (including mass
transit), affordable housing, basic city services -- all of these
things must be provided if we are to meet the challenges of the
new
Name: Karen
Age: 35
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
Everything! (Except maybe the traffic on the 6th.) I love
Denver and think it's the best city in the U.S. -- better than New
York and L.A. combined (I've lived in both). Although I
currently live in Montreal, Quebec, our family is hoping to move
back to Denver very soon. I miss it very much! I consider Denver
my hometown, wherever I live.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I think Denver will be even better than it is now. With the
rate of development and growth, I think it can only get better and
better, providing everyone works together to make it the best city
it can be.
Name: Robin
Age: 36
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
My fondest memory was watching the Denver Broncos win a Super
Bowl, it was my 2nd year living out here and to see that was
exciting.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
More people, more traffic, but hopefully the forests and parks
will be protected still and nature untouched.
Name: Patreesh
Age: ?
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
The regeneration of the downtown with the building of the New
Central Library as the exciting hub, serving all of Denver's
residents.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
More exciting, more dynamic; traffic clogged so downtown
neighborhoods will have developed more quickly.
Name: Michelle
Age: 36
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
My most fondest memory is when the Denver Broncos won the
Superbowl the first time and we all gathered downtown and
celebrated. I thought that was the greatest of all!! Way to go
Denver, we are truly a cool town!!
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Name: ecgoin
Age: 40
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
No better place than Denver to live today…or the foreseeable
future.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Larger..silicon hills here for the 2nd millennium.
Name: Alison
Age: 33
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
My fondest memories of Denver all have something to do with the
incredible weather:..waterskiing at Chatfield in 90 degrees, and
then snow the next day; random, wicked rain, hailstorms and
lightning; the fact that almost every day after it snows, we get a
bright, sunny, crisp, beautiful day, and having some of the
biggest, most amazing rainbows ever, right over metro Denver!
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I think that the level of congestion and the number people who
move here will continue to increase, requiring higher-density
housing and more small businesses in the metro area. Hopefully,
that will bring about development of areas where people will only
be able to walk or bike (or ride light rail), and cut down on the
number of cars in the City. I'd like to see metro Denver become
primarily pedestrian-oriented.
Name: Kuba
Age: 24
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
Denver is a beautiful and lovable place.
What do

I hope that Denver will continue to grow and develop.
Name: mimi

in 1995 i have studied in denver. my school named academy
alhelal aleslamia. i'm from kuwait, but i really had liked
Denver very much and i hope to visit it again.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
i think that there will be more technology and there will be
very much people.
Name: George
Age: 35
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
One beautiful city.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Love it.
Name: Virginia
Age: 34
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
I have really enjoyed the mountains, and hope that continues to
stay the way it is now.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
More populated. It worries me that the foothills may no loger
exist; recently I've seen more building of homes than anything
else.
Name: Audrey
Age: 22
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
One of my fondest memories would have to be back in '95 (I was
18). I was flying back from Florida, the mountains lay in the
distance, there were huge puffy clouds in the sky and the sun was
setting. It was one of the most breathtaking moments in my life.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I think Denver is going to skyrocket in growth...the suburbs
are going to expand in every direction.
Name: Mark
Age: 32
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
Watching the Colorado Avalanche bring the first World Title to
the greatest fans in the world. Even though the sentimental
favorites, the Denver Broncos, would not only duplicate this feat,
but win it twice! It was nice to see our region put on the sports
map in 1996 with our NHL hockey franchise.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
More infrastructure to help ease the congestion of
over-populated interstates. The pollution problem will continue to
worsen if growth in our city is not addressed.
Name: Mike Merino
Age: 45
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
One of my more interesting memories was Y2k, December 31, 1999.
I was "invited" to be in the command center at Denver
Health to help monitor the millennium change. Because of riots
after the last two successful Denver Superbowls, city officials,
rightfully, were very nervous. But fortunately, all our Y2k work
was done and the police presence large, so I spent the night
watching TV and surfing the Net. Yes Denver was one of the more
boring places for Y2k, but we were grateful for peace and quiet!
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Name: Joe
Age: 31
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
I discovered Capitol Hill when I was 20, moving from old North
Denver, lived here since (10 years). The area was seedy; full of
bums, junkies, crazy people, gun shots, prostitutes, empty
buildings, bad drivers, and ‘crack houses.’ I loved it!
Although gritty, there was nothing scary about it. Something was
always happening, like signs of someone sleeping in my car, to
being screamed at by a crazy person. But change has come. The
neighborhood is turning into a vibrant cultural center of the
region. Abandoned crack houses are now very nice condos. Cool
restaurants are popping up all the time. The police station on
Colfax closed down the drugs and the whores. Now with the water
testing clean, people are discovering its greatness. But really
has always been great!
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
With Uptown starting to come online and all the renovations on
the Hill, Central Denver will pack a powerful punch in the future.
Everyone will want to live there.
Name: Theresa
Age: 32
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
My fondest memory of Denver has always been the Parade of
Lights at the City and County Building.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I think Denver will become more computerized in everything we
say and do.
Name: Matthew
Age: 20
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
Driving westbound on I-70 on a stormy day. The sky was gray,
the mountains were a darker shade of gray, and the Denver skyline
lay proud at the bottom of the mountains, overpowered by the
mountains but still an impressive statement of this city's
economic success.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Hopefully, the Denver metro area will become more ambitious.
I've noticed that "ambition" is something Denver lacks
today. With our great amenities, we should be striving for
international recognition. Perhaps maybe even lure back the
Olympics and make up for that tragic mistake we made at turning
them down in the 1970's. Like I said, no ambition!
Name: Chris
Age: 20
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
John Elway leading our Denver Broncos to a victory in Super
Bowl XXXII. It brought our city together more than anything else
had at that time.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I think that the city will keep expanding the way it is now and
will solidify its place as one of the greatest cities in the
country.
Name: Janet
Age: 31
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
The revitalization of lower downtown (LODO) is one of my
fondest memories of Denver. I remember in college driving down
from Boulder to go to the few bars around (Thirsty's or Rock
Island). Now you can go to so many great places that existed only
as run down warehouses in a dark, seedy part of town where the
homeless lived. I love the renovation taking place not only in
Denver's commercial atmosphere, but in the residential
neighborhoods as well.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I think more people will continue to move to the urban setting,
which means transportation options will continue to improve.
Name: Jordan
Age: 29
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
The way the city has grown
and how radical the weather is. The smog-alert increases from the
early '90s to now is evidence of Denver's prosperous growth.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
The city will obviously be much more larger and congested.
There will also be more prosperity in the city then.
Name: Arturo
Age: 21
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
I still remember Denver as a
quiet city and lovely to walk on the streets, lovely to run your
car on the freeways, and a clean sky with no smog.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I think that if the government does
not take care of our city, it is going to become like Los Angeles
or New York -- too many people, violence, smog, trash. I
think Denver is a beautiful city, but we need to take care of it
to keep it nice and clean. We need to rescue Denver before it is
too late.
Name: R. E. Stencel

What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
In 1999, Denver city and
metro area were burning coal for electrical power "like there
was no tomorrow." The saddest part was that a non-trivial
part of the energy was nighttime lighting that was sprayed
pointlessly upward, lighting the moon and destroying the view of
the stars from in town. Sadly,
this wasteful lighting style was spreading throughout Colorado and
the nation.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Two possibilities: that we learn to manage our use of energy much better.
This means safe and effective down-lighting placed where
and when it is needed. Otherwise,
the wasteful approach was sustained until society collapsed from
coal-burning/CO2 greenhouse gas buildup, stress and related
factors.
Name: mindie
Age: 13
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
That I worked the Taste of
Colorado and had a lot of fun doing it.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
We will have rilly cool cars and
new wardrobes.
Name: John-Michael
Age: 46
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
The election of Mayor
Wellington Webb, the repeal of Colorado's Amendment 2, the
incredibly wonderful, artistic infrastructure created with the
help of Mrs. Wilma Webb, and the booming economy, are some of my
fond memories of the Queen City.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Better.
Name: Alisa Mae and
Laura Jean
Age: 21
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
Fun, fun and more fun.
We love Denver. We've been here all our lives and we'll stay here
all our lives. Best friends forever.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Fun!!! Hopefully our city
will grow more, but stay pure.
Name: Joyce
Age: 30
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
In 1993 (the Summer of
Violence), I purchased my first home in Northeast Denver. It was
an abandoned Victorian that has required much love and energy. We
didn't need TV that first year because Cops played out on our
street every night. Now the crack houses and the gunfire are gone.
There is grass in every yard on the block. The neighborhood
children of every race play together in the street. I've loved to
watch the urban neighborhoods reclaim themselves and to see the
way neighbors are looking beyond the obvious to develop roots and
a great place to come home to every night.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
When I bought my house, Denver was
still battling recession. Housing prices were low, interest rates
even lower. While it's been wonderful to see the re-birth of our
city, we need to work hard on infrastructure to ensure that Denver
does not become even more exclusive than it already is. Economic
cycles follow a trend that is undeniable, and we need to act now
to ensure that we are not faced with the same early '80s problem
we had during the oil bust. If we are not cautious now, we will
not see the fruits of our labors in 10 years, but rather a
down-turn that will amount to the Denver we do not wish to
revisit.
Name: Katherine
Age: 31
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
I remember walking through
the Denver Museum of Natural History with my new sweetheart in
November 2000. Although I'd been through it many times with my
students and nieces, it was wonderful to experience it with my new
(and hopefully last) boyfriend. We walked hand in hand through the
entire museum and even participated in the fossil discovery
stamping activity they'd developed for kiddos. It was romantic and
wonderful, as well as a good way to find out about our mutual
interest in dinosaurs.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I hope Denver is still thriving 10
years from now. I hope to see light rail service extended into
Boulder, Parker and Aurora. I hope public transportation
revolutionizes the way Denverites, new and old, think about
living. I hope we continue our worldwide reputation for being a
friendly city.
Name: Robert Garrett
Age: 42
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
When Wellington Webb said,
"Some things are not for sale." The
rebuilding of Two Elks Lodge. The success of Lower Downtown
Denver. John Fielder's photographs.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
(This includes the Denver metroplex.):
More of our rolling high plains replaced by rolling roof tops.
Name: Kara Taylor
Age: 21
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
When the Broncos won their
first Super Bowl, I skipped class at UNC and went to the
Championship Parade. I cried when John Elway FINALLY stepped up to
the mic. That was one of Denver's greatest moments.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Crowded!
Name: Kay
Age: 29
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
A few years ago, a friend and I
returned to my apartment a few blocks off of Colfax and as soon as
we got out of the car, we saw a transvestite walking down the
sidewalk, swinging "her" hips and in high heels making
"her" well over 6 feet tall! As
soon as my friend and I reached the vestibule of my building, we
burst into uncontrollable laughter.
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Massively
overpopulated, which is one of the reasons I chose to move. The
housing will probably skyrocket in price as well. But good
luck to the rest of you who are still there!
Name: Leah R.
Age: 19
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
I have lived here my whole life. Although it
seems to be boring sometimes, deep down I will always have a love
for Denver. There have been so many new developments that
have made the city even bigger and more entertaining!...all of it
I love!
My fondest memory *smiles* would be this
past summer (of 2000). Me and all my friends on the side of 16th
and Arapahoe listenin to the live music that Rock Bottom would
provide on Friday nights, and it suddenly DOWNPOURED.
We were all soaking wet, but we were
all still dancing in the rain! It was awesome!
What do
you think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I hope that the city is still beautiful
and clean! I know that the
city is expanding and getting bigger, but I hope that the
government and the Colorado residents will help keep it from
becoming a trashy city. We need to keep it clean...and not have it
turn out like LA or NY, with all the crimes, drugs, smog, dirt,
etc. Please help keep it nice!
Name: Ryan
Age: 20
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
When the Broncos won the Super Bowl in 1998.
Everyone seemed to converge downtown; people were hanging off the
lamp posts, and thousands of people were surging through the
streets. Everyone was happy and Denver stood together and cheered.
I've never been kissed so many times in my life! It was magical
and exciting!
What do you
think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I think Denver is going to be huge.
Its small town feel is going to be gone. People aren't going to be
as friendly. DTC is going to be packed full of office buildings
and the whole city is going to be gigantic! I'm not going to
mention flying cars because as a kid, I was certain we'd have them
by the year 2000, and I am still waiting! Ha Ha!
Name: Leroy
Age: 29
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
The two Super Bowl Championships that the
Broncos won.
*The "ground breaking" for the new Broncos stadium.
What do you
think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Denver will continue to prosper and grow in
culture, allowing it to remain the best place in the world to
live!
Name: David L.
Roberts
Age: 46
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
I arrived in Colorado from Wyoming during
the 1990s. Fond memories include enjoying time with my mother in
the Denver area during her last two years of life (she died in
August 2000). She loved watching the figure and hockey skaters at
the Ice Arena in Westminster and other activities. Another fond
memory was attending the Green Party National Convention in Denver
during the summer of 2000 and getting to meet Ralph Nader, whom I
proudly voted for. And as long as Democrats keep nominating those
conservative New Democrat types (rather than FDR Democrats), I
will stay in the Green Party. I also enjoyed working with college
students.
What do you think
Denver will be like in the year 2010?
I hope Denver in 2010 is a good,
better place to live for all people. I hope America catches up
with Canada, England, Scandinavian countries and the industrial
world, by providing universal health care coverage for all our
citizens. I hope libraries, hospitals, museums, and senior care
facilities are improved and better-financed. My predictions for or
by 2010: If she shows she is a real, traditional Democrat,
President Hillary. Udall as Interior Secretary. Rockies win the
World Series. A consumer/activist TV network channel airs
nationally. Communities develop their own resident- and
worker-owned and operated companies and factories. Wind energy
development increases. Light rail for passengers in northern
communities of Denver. More electric and alternative cars. Variety
shows return to television. Best wishes to everyone now and 10
years from now! And to those in 2010: We hoped for a better
future, we worked for a better future, we stayed optimistic, we
cared about others, and we count (and counted) our blessings each
day.
Name: JASL
Age: 29
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
Broncos play Baltimore in playoffs today.
Tearing down Mile High soon. Great weather, bad traffic. Pollution
getting worse. Construction on I-36 like a race track with cones.
License plates cost too much. DIA train breaks a lot.
What do you
think Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Benny's restaurant still the Best.
DDFL still the Best.
Mountain property slim.
UMich will be National champs.
Denver will be most crowded, high tech, polluted, but most
accessible to skiing in the country.
Name: Josh L.
Age: 14
What is your fondest
memory of Denver between 1991 and 2000?
My fondest memory of Denver between 1991 and now is the Denver
Broncos winning back-to-back Super Bowls, which really put Denver
in the spotlight, along with the end of the John Elway era. I
think this was one of the best moments in football this
millennium, and will not be forgotten in 2001 and the new
millennium.
What do you think
Denver will be like in the year 2010?
Denver will be the same city, only much bigger, and become an
international landmark.
Name: Lori P.

More people are still going to
populate the area and the state. Wildlife areas will turn into
homes and we will look like L.A.

more teachers, and more neat cars.
