Honoring a Pioneer - Fern Osborne (January 1, 1922 - December 15, 2009)

The Denver Commission on Aging recently lost one of its most active and memorable members of its commission Fern Osborne:

As a long time member of the Denver Commission on Aging, Fern never failed to "push" for advocacy and challenged all to be bold about the needs of seniors.  She was tireless, and there was no person too important to keep her from saying what she needed to say on the behalf of seniors.

When it comes to legislative actions leading to positive changes for seniors, Fern was Colorado's "Ted Kennedy". Though she was never elected to the office, she was the greatest legislator of my time. She did all and much more to move agendas forward than many of the elected. In her passing, She is now, an "advocate emeritus" in the fight for senior services. She was blessed with a long and productive life. Colorado will be sorely weakened in its advocacy for the needs and rights of seniors. Those of us who worked with Fern Osborn will be called to move her work forward and to become a leader in the manner in which she taught us.

She was a state and national treasure and will be remembered for many years to come.

Lucia Guzman, Executive Director, Agency for Human Rights & Community Relations
