Bicycle Laws

Bicycles are considered vehicles under Chapter 54 of the Denver Revised Municipal Code. As such, bicyclists have all the rights and duties that apply to motorized vehicles. Bicycles are allowed on almost all Denver streets.

Riding Two Abreast

Bicyclists may ride two abreast. Riding two abreast shall not impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, and on a laned roadway shall ride within a single lane.

Stay Off Sidewalks

Bicyclists are prohibited from using sidewalks unless:

  • the sidewalk is part of a designated bike route,
  • within one block of preparing to mount/ dismount at parking (speed limit 6 MPH), or
  • engaged in delivering newspapers.

Remember, always yield to pedestrians.

Night Riding

At night, bicycles should be equipped with a front white light visible to 500 feet and a rear red reflector visible when illuminated by headlights to 600 feet.

One Person Per Bike

Riding double is only permitted when carrying a child in an approved carrier or when riding on a tandem bicycle. Children should always wear a helmet.

Bike Bans

Bicyclists are not allowed to ride on the 16th Street Pedestrian Mall, except on Sundays. Bike parking is not permitted on the mall.

Stolen Bicycles

If your bike has been stolen, call the Denver Police Department in the area in which you reside, or in which your bicycle was stolen (see a precinct map).

Help protect yourself from bike theft: Register your bike online to assist the Denver Police Department with recovery of your bike should it get lost or stolen. Bike registration can also assist in the successful identification of injured cyclists. You can register your bicycle using Denver PD's Online Bicycle Registration. Click on "Register your bike" on the right-hand side of the page. Prior to registration, you will need specific details about the bicycle, such as type, model, wheel size, color, etc. You will aslo need to include the serial number, which can typically be found under the seat, near the handlebars or the pedal crank.
