Boettcher Concert Hall is a 360-degree-surround concert hall designed to place the audience close to the stage in a unique environment while maintaining and surpassing traditional symphonic sound quality!

Boettcher Concert Hall opened its doors in March of 1978. It represents a combination of innovative thinking and flawless execution. Eighty percent of the seats are within 65 feet of the stage. By lending itself to conventions, concerts and special programs, Boettcher Concert Hall serves to illustrate the versatility and style of its unique but functional design.

SEATING CAPACITY:

The hall, which seats 2,634 people, offers five areas of seating surrounding the stage: Dress Circle, Orchestra, Mezzanine, Parquet (which is also designed for choral groups performing in conjunction with a symphony), and the rings (four semi-circular sections suspended from the ceiling). No seat in any section is more than 100 feet from the Conductor's Podium and 80 percent of the seats are within 68 feet of the stage. The concert hall is also equipped with excellent handicapped seating.

ACOUSTICS: The acoustical design of the hall consists of several main features. The Acoustical Moat, located underneath the stage is essential in the surround design, since it acts as a reverberate chamber for low frequency sound. The Canopy consists of 108 circular discs, the primary device for distribution of sound to the musicians as well as the audience. These discs effect certain lighting positions on the catwalks and ring hangers. The majority of the seats have high backs extending above the heads of the patrons to provide additional musical presence.

During the summer of 1993, Boettcher Concert Hall was closed for acoustical remodeling. This project was completed in September and provides both the performers and patrons with an enhanced environment! This allows for a greater flexibility in controlling the Acoustical Chamber and will "cater" the sound of the concert hall to a variety of clients. Also, acoustical draperies were added along four walls (which can be raised and lowered to a variety of levels for the desired effect). These enhancements improved what was already an outstanding feature of the hall!

DRESSING ROOMS:

There are five Star Dressing Rooms with restroom facilities (including showers). Boettcher Concert Hall also has two Studios with adjoining restrooms and showers. Two large Chorus Rooms - able to seat 200 - are available and have adjoining showers and restroom facilities. There is one Company Manager’s office and three Practice Rooms also available for use by the client. All of these rooms are included in the rental rates.

LOADING DOCK:

Located in the lower level of the Concert Hall in the alley running southwest from 13th Street. The entrance to the alley is between the Stage Door and Champa Street. The dock can facilitate a truck or trailer up to 45 feet in length.

STAGE DOOR:

The Stage Door is located at 950 13th Street between Arapahoe and Champa Streets (under the Galleria). The door is clearly marked for identification and is staffed with a receptionist during normal working hours, as well as during all events.

STAGE:

The 2,400 square foot stage has 18 removable traps and can accommodate up to 120 musicians for large symphonic performances. Between the orchestra seats and the stage is one lift, 15' x 60', with another lift adjacent to the musician's entrance 20' x 15'. These lifts can be lowered to provide an orchestra pit for 80 musicians, and can also be raised to the stage level to provide 1,260 square feet of additional stage area. If the Orchestra Pit is elevated and not in use, we can add an additional 45 seats, if needed.

TRAPS:

The center and other sections of the stage floor are trapped with 4' x 8' traps. The trap room floor is 10'6" below the stage level.  

FLY PIPE:

One electrically operated 63 foot fly pipe is provided up-stage for back lighting, back drops and banners. Capacity of the pipe is 1,500 pounds. The pipe stops at 26 feet above stage level and flies in to four feet above the stage.

LIGHTING SPECIFICATIONS:

The patch panel, and company switch are located off stage right, adjacent to the stage manager's position, at stage level. The Control Console can be located in the hall at a location convenient to the event. The Orchestra Lights are a separate system for general illumination of the orchestra. Additional equipment is available such as:

POWER:

There are two 400 AMP 3 Phase distribution boxes on Stage Right, a 200 AMP distribution box in the Pit, and another in the attic—all with disconnect Posicam. In addition, 4 wire 120 volt is provided adjacent to the patch panel.

SOUND SYSTEM:

The design of the sound system in Boettcher Concert Hall is as unique as the quality of the acoustics. In an acoustic hall configuration, Boettcher has breath-taking ambient qualities which have been pleasing symphonic concert-goers for years. Altering the acoustic qualities of this Hall is made possible by motorized acoustical panels. In order to supply even sound coverage to this round concert hall, a computer is used to control the four fall range speaker clusters. This state of the art sound system is based around a 32 channel Yamaha mixing console. From subtle "lifting" of concert instrumentation to full concert sound, this sound system epitomizes the Denver Performing Arts Complex's commitment to excellence. Boettcher can provide 8 stand-up risers and 8 sit-down, four levels with heights of 8, 16, 24, 32 inches respectively.

Boettcher Concert Hall Sound System

Boettcher Concert hall has an RT-60 (natural reverb) approaching 3 seconds. Because of the nature of the room, sound reinforcement is a tricky task. Boettcher has 2800 seats which completely surround the stage. In addition, the stage is not symetrical to the house. It is advised that the house sound system be used when reinforcement is needed.

*Sound house mix position is located just off center in the middle of the orchestra section. Please note that if the renter brings in an additional or a substitute console, the mix postion will be located in the cross isle (center) of the second orchestra section.
