 About Bill Daniels
"When you put your life in perspective, you realize how little time there is to make something truly significant out of it. To some people this might mean acquiring a lot of possessions, building a business or owning property. There's nothing wrong with these aspirations, but for me, they pale in comparison to individuals who want to leave something more consequential as their legacy." --Bill Daniels

Bill Daniels
(1920-2000)

Bill Daniels was one of those remarkable individuals who achieved success through a combination of perseverance and good fortune. As a young man, he was the undefeated Golden Gloves Champion of New Mexico. In World War II and the Korean War he was a naval fighter pilot who retired as Full Commander in the U.S. Navy. As one of the pioneers in cable television, he went on to own and operate hundreds of cable TV systems in virtually every state in the country. The firm he founded, Daniels and Associates, is nationally recognized as a leading provider of investment banking services to media and technology companies. An avid sports fan, Bill was one of the first cable leaders to focus on sports programming, giving impetus to today's highly popular regional sports networks. He also sponsored heavyweight boxing champions, served as president of the American Basketball Association, was a founder of the United States Football League, and was an owner of several professional sports teams, including a stake in the Los Angeles Lakers.

A Lifetime of Giving

While Bill was widely known and respected for his leadership role in the sports and cable industries, he became equally respected for his humanitarian endeavors. Bill long believed that people fortunate enough to succeed have a responsibility to help others who may not have had the same advantages. As a result, over the years he made countless charitable contributions and gave back to the community in some highly creative and meaningful ways. He helped found Cenikor, a nonprofit rehabilitation center for drug addicts, alcoholics, and people with criminal behavior problems. With his plane, he set a world speed record for business jets while raising $300,000 for Junior Achievement. He donated his $7 million mansion, Cableland, to Denver so that the city would have an official mayoral residence. He also was a long-time supporter of several organizations serving young people and those in need in metro Denver.

 Features of the Residence
Descending from the foyer into the "great room" with its soaring ceilings, you are immediately transported into a world of opulent style. The plaster, reflective ceiling features tiered, multi-level lighting, interspersed with skylights, generating contemporary polish while softening the room's scale. A palette of rosy mauve adds warmth to elegant furnishings that envelope guests with comfortable seating. On a raised platform, a pink Weber baby grand piano sits beside a podium controlling a closed-circuit television system. The latter enables speakers to manipulate TVs throughout the public area, where fund-raising events often include entertainment and video viewing. It also enables a master of ceremonies to enhance audience participation by zooming in with a built-in camera that's perched high above.

The multi-level main room features four hospitality centers. Each establishes an intimate environment distinguished by shapes and textures. This assures comfort during large and small gatherings. A semi-circular bar lies in a corner beneath an enormous overhead TV screen, visible throughout the room. It is one of Cableland's 88 televisions. Beneath a grand crystal chandelier, the dining room provides ample space for several immense tables and seats 32. It contains yet another TV concealed behind a decorative sculptured wall. Food for all Cableland functions is prepared in an adjacent catering kitchen.

Ceiling-to-floor windows permit guests to overlook the outdoor pool, which is encircled by multi-level, terraced landscaping and fountains that mimic indoor shapes and angles. A bathhouse, decorated in a lush, tropical motif, includes a guest lounging area and dressing rooms. A covered patio, stylish service bar and separate guest house lie off the pool area.

A wing off the main entrance houses Bill's private quarters (two bedrooms, two baths, kitchen, dressing areas, media viewing room, and health spa). Here, a darker, cooler color scheme and scaled down architecture reflect Bill's personal taste. The media viewing room, a home theater with a wall of 64 TVs, each tuned to a different cable channel, and built-in, large screen TV, rivals most theaters for video and sound quality.

Bill's generosity reaches beyond the walls of Cableland. Outdoors, several generations of birds and squirrels already have found refuge in special "condos" constructed from tall trees.
