PHASE 1 OF THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN COMPLETED

Project Overview: Construction of the long-awaited Washington Street widening project is underway. The project is located in north Denver on Washington Street, just south of I-70, between 45th and the South Platte River.

Phase 1 of this project will lengthen the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway structure to accommodate 2 additional lanes of traffic in the underpass, eliminating the bottleneck in this arterial roadway. This will be achieved by adding 2 steel spans onto the existing bridge. In addition, the bridge has been widened from 5 tracks to 6, in order to provide the railroad with 5 operational tracks at all times during construction. This phase of the project will be completed in the summer of 2003. The second phase of the project will include installing the new roadway, sidewalk improvements and a pump station to eliminate flooding in the underpass.

The entire project is anticipated to be completed in 2006.
