FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Establishment of Child Support

It may not be necessary to go to court. The Child Support Enforcement (CSE) technician has the ability to negotiate child support orders at our office through an administrative process. This is the first method of choice. If an agreement cannot be reached, the CSE technician will refer the case for a court hearing.

How much Child Support will be ordered?

Child Support is determined by applying the income of one or both parties to a fixed table. The result is the Child Support amount. Credit may be given for other Child Support orders being paid, day care expenses, medical insurance premium for the child(ren), etc.

What if the non-custodial parent is not in Colorado?

When the non-custodial parent is located outside of Colorado but the child was conceived in Colorado, child support can be established in Colorado through a court hearing. If the child was not conceived in Colorado, the local child support office will file papers to the non-custodial parent's state and they will establish a child support order.
