The Valentine’s Day celebration at the Denver Clerk and Recorder’s office has become a popular annual event, and the marriage license desk is expecting to host a large number of lovebirds applying for marriage licenses that day. The cupids at the Denver Clerk and Recorder’s office aim to make February 14 sweet for couples wishing to get hitched, and will have a number of surprises in store.
A variety of generous local merchants and Denver city agencies have shown their Valentine’s Day spirit, donating gifts to be given to the couples. Each couple coming in to obtain a marriage license that day will be given a gift bag, and couples will also receive gifts ranging from dinner at one of a variety of local restaurants to a bowling party at Lucky Strike Lanes, a romantic overnight stay for two at the Oxford Hotel or the Hotel Monaco, or tickets to one of a number of Denver arts and cultural venues. For a honeymoon trip to be remembered for a lifetime, our co-sponsor Southwest Airlines will be on hand again this year to award a pair of roundtrip tickets on Southwest Airlines to one very lucky couple.
To make the day even more special, Mayor Michael B. Hancock is expected to drop by sometime in late morning to congratulate the Valentine’s Day sweethearts and perhaps preside over a wedding. Herbie the Love Judge (retired Denver County Court Judge Herbert Galchinsky) and his bi-lingual (English/Spanish) colleague retired Denver Magistrate Claire Fish Mootz will be on hand throughout most of the day to accommodate couples who would like to tie the knot right on the spot. Last year, about half the couples who came in for licenses took advantage of the free marriage ceremony offer.
“This event is one of the nicest services we offer to customers all year,” said Clerk and Recorder Debra Johnson. “It’s a more romantic and fun experience for the couples than just waiting in line for a government document. And we are so thankful for the generosity of our local merchants and Denver city agencies who donated gifts to make Valentine’s Day special for our couples.”
The office will be decorated in this year’s Valentine theme of “Love Is In the Air.” The “Sweetheart Bistro” (known on other days as the Clerk and Recorder conference room) will feature decorations, refreshments and an opportunity for couples to have their photos taken in front of a romantic backdrop.
The Office of the Clerk and Recorder’s marriage license counter is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with licenses issued up to 4:30 p.m. It is located just inside the Court Place entrance to the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building, 201 W. Colfax Ave.
