Runoff in Three Districts
In May’s Municipal election, all of the city’s incumbent elected officials retained their seats, including the Mayor, Auditor and 10 of 13 City Council members.
But in Council Districts 3, 7 and 8, where seats had been left open by resignations and term limits, none of the candidates running for those seats received the required 50% plus one vote margin to win in May.
City Charter rules called for a runoff-election in early June to decided these races. Voters in the three districts were asked to decide between the two candidates gaining the most votes in May.
Voters Select New Representatives
The Denver Election Commission reported nearly 35 percent of active, registered voters turned in ballots in the June runoff election with these results;
-
In district 3 Paul D. Lopez received nearly 62 percent of the vote, gaining the seat left vacant by Rosemary Rodriguez
-
In District 7 Chris Nevitt received nearly 1500 more votes than Shelly Watters. Nevitt fills the seat left vacant by Kathleen MacKenzie who was term limited.
-
And in the closest race of all, Carla Madison received just over 51 percent of the vote. And will occupy the Council Seat left by Elbra Wedgeworth who was also term-limited.
