Why does Denver’s Zoning Code Need to be Updated?

Denver’s zoning regulations that guide land use and development have not been updated in over fifty years. Some say they are broken, unwieldy, outdated and in need of a major overhaul. Now, after four years of work, City officials are sharing with Denver Citizens the draft of a ‘new’ zoning code.

How did the New Code Come About?

Comprehensive plans adopted in 19889 and in 2000 recommended overhaul of the Code.  And Blueprint Denver went further, providing the vision and initial strategy for doing so.  A Zoning Code Task Force, a large Citizen Advisory Committee and City Council took on the massive effort of re-writing the zoning code.  Their work was completed this past spring.

What is Different About The New Zoning Code?

The New Code is based on the wide variety of character found in Denver’s neighborhoods and on the collective vision of how Denver should look in the future.
