Denver's New Theater District
Watch this month's Council Matters Online

‘
Back to the Future’ for Denver’s ‘Theatre District’
The heart of the City’s Theatre District is Curtis St. and Denver has a rich history of theatre there. In fact, the City had a theatre before it had its first hospital. Denver is experiencing a resurgence of its historic Theatre District. Creating this vibrant new destination is now in the works for an area that Thomas Edison once called ‘the brightest street in America.” Host Beverly Weaver discusses this topic with
District 8 Councilwoman Carla Madison and
District 4 Councilwoman Peggy Lehmann.
What can we expect?
The word ‘streetscape’ is being used quite often in plans for the area, what does that mean, and what is involved in developing a ‘streetscape’ for the theatre district? There will be new signs and new zoning for the area as well. The discussion with the Councilmembers also covers the issues of safety and parking in the area.
How will the ‘Theatre District’ be managed and operated?
A 501 3C corporation has been formed to represent the district through public art investment and city and regional promotions. No tax payer money will be used in developing the district. The Denver Theatre District Board of Directors will include representatives from the City, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Office of Economic Development, Theatres and Arenas, the DCPA, the Downtown Denver Partnership, the DMCVB, and two representatives from the private land owners in the district.
