Civic Center public surv ey results to be presented

(DENVER) After six months of public input since launching a comprehensive public dialog on the future of Civic Center, Denver Parks and Recreation will present a summary of findings at the Denver Parks and Recreation Parks and Recreation Advisory Board on Thursday, January 11, 2007, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Colorado Historical Society Museum, 1300 Broadway, Conference Room

As part of the process of implementing the 2005 Civic Center Park Master Plan, a public dialog was stimulated by exploring design ideas developed by Denver Art Museum architect, Daniel Libeskind.  Since presenting his design concepts on August 30, 2006, over 1,000 citizens have participated in the series of public meetings hosted by Denver Parks and Recreation, Civic Center Conservancy, Denver City Council members and various neighborhood groups and organizations.  A diverse and wide range of public opinion was documented by 677 written surveys submitted to the department along with other written responses.  Responses were compiled, and a summary of findings will be presented at the January 11 meeting.  As a result, park officials have gained a greater understanding of Civic Center priorities and a better grasp of design preferences and ideas for improving the park.  The process also generated greater public participation and awareness of Civic Center issues.

“The Libeskind ideas presented some bold concepts for revitalizing the park and sparked a very productive public conversation,” commented Denver Parks and Recreation Manager Kim Bailey.  “Based on everything that has been presented during this process, the number one priority will continue to be preservation of our historic features.  At this time no funds are available for major improvements; this process will serve to prepare us for the future”.

Libeskind was contracted by the Civic Center Conservancy, Denver Parks’ non-profit partner, to develop conceptual ideas for revitalizing the park that would inspire public discourse and stimulate community interest and participation in park improvements.
