Volunteers needed to pitch-in for The Greenway Foundation’s annual RIVER SWEEP event on the South Platte River
(Denver) On Saturday, September 30, 2006, the South Platte River and surrounding recreational areas and trails will get a much-needed cleanup as Denver-area residents join the Greenway Foundation and Denver Parks and Recreation in the annual “River Sweep” volunteer event.
More than 300 volunteers are needed to participate in a “Border-to-Border River Sweep” cleanup of trails and recreational areas in and around the South Platte River. The goal is to complete a total cleanup of the 11-miles of trails and river in the South Platte Corridor that lies within City borders.
Included in the day’s activities will be litter pickup, weeding, graffiti removal, cleaning of designated river banks and seeding of natural areas. Canoes, kayakers and waders are also needed to help clean out bank to bank in the river.
Denver joined the program through a partnership of Denver Parks and Recreation and long-time partner, The Greenway Foundation. The partnership continues to be the driving force behind first-class volunteer experience. In partnership with the Greenway Foundation, the City is actively recruiting volunteers to help with the event, and is seeking individual volunteers, as well as corporations, families, service groups, neighborhood organizations, and youth groups who are willing to give their time and effort to this program.
Since 1974, the Greenway Foundation has led the effort to enhance and preserve the South Platte River and its tributaries throughout the Denver metropolitan area. Over the last three decades, over $60 million of environmental and recreational amenities have been added to these valuable natural resources.
Interested persons need to call the Denver Parks and Recreation volunteer hotline at (303) 331-4061 to sign-up. The Denver Parks and Recreation Volunteer Office will send confirmation information regarding time, location, and schedule.
