What's next for DEVO?
Save the date! - Saturday August 18th
This is a DEVO hallmark activity that brings together city employees from across all departments and agencies into teams that, in a single day, paint the homes of a dozen or more elderly and disabled Denver home owners. Last year, several departments formed one or more of their own teams to help build better relationships with their coworkers while helping the less fortunate.
In support of Denver's Road Home initiative, DEVO will be helping to sponsor an event to help end homelessness in Denver. This year, DEVO will be working with Denver Human Services to arrange for an opportunity for you to help make a difference in the lives of some of those trying to break out of their cycle of homelessness.
Recent Accomplishments
- 3rd Annual Volunteer Fair
On Thursday, April 19th 2007, DEVO held the 3rd annual volunteer fair. This event, hosted in the atrium of the Webb office building, featured nearly three dozen different charitable organizations. Representatives of these worthwhile groups were on hand to explain their organizations' missions and to register new volunteers. For those of you that participated, a heartfelt "Thank you!" for setting aside part of your break or lunch hour to check out the great volunteer opportunities we had there!
DEVO volunteer events have included:
- Salvation Army Food Drive Blitz
On December 9, 2006, 120 City Employees and their families spent the better part of their Saturday sorting and boxing donated food for needy Denver families to enjoy over the Holidays. Everyone who helped out that day said they had a lot of fun, too!
For the second year in a row, DEVO worked with Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. on Saturday, August 19, 2006 to paint homes for elderly and disabled Denver homeowners. 172 City Employees and their families formed DEVO teams and painted eleven homes despite continued rainy weekends!
In cooperation with the Wellness Center, DEVO recruited City Employees to help Channel 9 reach their volunteer goal to help staff this great event.
- 2nd Annual Volunteer Fair
On March 22, 2006, hundreds of City Employees learned about opportunities to volunteer in our community from thirty participating agencies including Metro Volunteers, Habitat for Humanity, Brother’s Redevelopment, Inc., Capitol Hill Community Services, DEEP, Denver Municipal Animal Shelter, etc.
- Habitat For Humanity & Neighborhood Partners
DEVO held their first event on June 26, 2004. Forty seven city employees volunteered over 300 hours to Habitat for Humanity and Neighborhood Partners at three building sites in northeast Denver - the 25th Anniversary House, the Women's Build House and a Neighborhood Partners’ house. - Trees for Granby
Remember the armored bulldozer and the demolition of buildings in Granby in 2004? Trees were also destroyed. Denver has donated replacement trees to Granby and the City Forester helped oversee the planting. 10 city employees volunteered and helped residents of Granby plant the trees.
- Neighborhood Partners’ Neighborhood Blitz
In September 2004, Neighborhood Partners hosted its 2nd Annual Blitz in the Park Hill Neighborhood. DEVO volunteers helped low-income families, the elderly and people with disabilities with minor house repairs, painting projects and yard work.
Also in September 2004, DEVO participated in the Metro Volunteers' "Volunteer Fair" on the 16th Street Mall. Scores of non-profits set up booths and tables along the mall to generate interest in volunteering and charitable causes.
- 2 + 2 Tutoring - Cole Middle School
The 2 2 tutoring program was an excellent way for City employees to make a meaningful connection with middle school students at one of Denver's most at risk schools. Volunteers committed two hours, twice a month to give students the support they need to be more effective learners in the classroom and to improve their CSAP scores. Over thirty City employees volunteered at Cole Middle School in January and February 2005.
- DEVO Volunteer Fair
In May 2005, DEVO sponsored a volunteer fair in the atrium of the Webb building. Thirty organizations set up booths to explain their organizations' missions and to register new volunteers. 150 city employees signed up with the various organizations - including 25 for DEVO - Thanks, City Workers!
