New Signs Allow for New Driving Options

Denver Public Works Officials unveiled new signage identifying on-street parking spaces for car share operators in the downtown area. The signs are the final piece of a yearlong plan to bring car sharing to Denver.  Car sharing provides residents, employees, and visitors to Denver with increased access to convenient transportation options while also reducing on-street parking demand.

Denver Public Works recently created new City policies to allow car share companies to operate in Denver. The new Car Share Permit Program allows operators to obtain a permit for 1 of 30 dedicated on-street parking spaces in the downtown area. Signage unveiled today indicates the parking spaces for operator specific vehicles.

The new “Car Share Parking Only” signs indicate that a space is reserved for car share vehicles with the correct permit only. Each sign includes the logo of the car share operator who has permitted the space for easy recognition by both customers and enforcement teams. Drivers should be aware that these spaces are reserved for the appropriate car share vehicle; if a car is parked in the space that does not have the correct permit, it will be ticketed and towed.

“Denver Public Works is proud to enable car share to flourish in Denver through the creation of the car share permit program,” said Manager of Public Works Jose Cornejo. “Thanks to the hard work of our Parking Operations team, car sharing is now a viable multi-modal option for Denver residents, employees, and visitors to move efficiently throughout the Mile High City.”

Dedicated on-street space permits are purchased by qualifying car share operators annually for $750 per space in the downtown area and $500 in neighborhoods outside of Downtown. 28 spaces in the downtown corridor have been purchased by four car share operators. Denver Public Works did not remove any public parking to allocate the permitted spaces, but instead found spaces that were not suitable for general parking.

There are currently four car share operators who have permitted on-street spaces in Denver: eGo Car Share, Zipcar, car2go, and Hertz 24/7.
