Mayor John Hickenlooper joins host Tamara Banks for a look back at 2008, and a look ahead to 2009.
"In 2009, with all the challenge from the economy, a lot of people are worried and fearful. What I keep trying to tell people is ‘We don’t have anything to fear.’ This State and this City, we’ve seen our ups and our downs before, and every time we come together, we figure out together a way to deal with it, and together we find solutions and overcome the challenges that we face... In any kind of a challenge, there’s always opportunity. I got laid off back in 1986, one the worst recessions we had – outside of the Great Depression, it was probably the worst recession of the entire 20th Century, and in the end, in 1988, at the bottom of a terrible recession, my partners and I opened the Wynkoop Brewing Company. We almost went out of business, we had to work 70 hours a week, we struggled for a number of years, but in the end we helped kick off that whole transformation of lower downtown into a really cool national model of what a downtown can look like – more housing, and almost every warehouse has been renovated and put into a new use throughout all of downtown and now even north of Broadway. Well, this recession, this challenge we’re in right now is going to be the same."
