MUNICIPAL SHELTER SEES JUMP IN ADOPTIONS
Reports Double-Digit Increase in Adoptions For 2007

Denver’s Animal Care and Control division of the Department of Environmental Health proudly reports that the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter experienced a double-digit increase in animal adoptions in 2007.

“Controlling and abating the homeless animal population is an important goal for Denver,” said Nancy Severson, Manager of Denver Environmental Health.  “The recent bond passage to build a new municipal animal shelter confirms that increasing adoptions, getting lost animals back to their owners, and improving the care and well being of the homeless and lost animal population is a priority with Denver residents.”     In 2007...

DENVER ELECTIONS NOT AFFECTED BY STATE ACTION
Outcome of Senate Bill 189 does not affect Denver’s election

Denver Clerk and Recorder Stephanie O’Malley has issued a statement on the defeat of Senate Bill 189 in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“The outcome of Senate Bill 189 does not affect Denver’s election. We had announced our intentions to conduct a paper ballot election back on January 23 and have been working full steam ahead planning for the August and November elections based on that. Our election model doesn’t require any change in current law.

“As we have planned, Denver voters will have the option of voting by mail, voting in an early voting location or voting on a paper ballot in a combined precinct polling place on Election Day. We will have at least one electronic voting machine in each voting location to keep the city in compliance with the federal Help America Vote Act.

“Public mistrust of the current generation of voting machines has not abated, and I do remain concerned about the potential for renewed litigation since this legislation is indeed dead.”

Program to Reduce Dangerous Side Impact Collisions at Intersections

CHILD WELFARE PRACTICES EXAMINED
Report Called a Tough, Fair and Independent Review

The Denver Department of Human Services has released the results of a third-party review of its child welfare practices. Roxane White, DDHS Manager, called for the third party review in November 2007. This request was made after a second child fatality in Denver, and in response to a commitment to improve and strengthen the department’s child protection practices.

"The review found that while we do a number of things well there are areas where we need to improve," White said. "We have already instituted some of the recommendations and the rest will be in place by Nov. 30 of this year."

The review was conducted by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Child Welfare League of America in collaboration with the Colorado State Department of Human Services.
