Denver Headlines Saturday, July 05, 2008 | 73 ° Few Clouds   CITY ADOPTS GREEN STANDARDS FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING Subsidized Affordable Housing Projects Requirements Beginning  in 2010   The Denver Office of Economic Development recently adopted a series of sustainability standards for all City-supported affordable housing. Beginning in January 2010, all affordable housing projects receiving City subsidies will meet the Enterprise Green Communities criteria. Affordable housing developers are encouraged to build according to the standards during 2008 and 2009. The city’s adoption of the standards was announced at the Energy Star Summit in Denver. "PUFFER" TIME AGAIN Illegal to Keep Cars Running Unattended   As the temperatures outside drop this winter, we will unfortunately suffer the pain of getting into cold cars. Many drivers will be tempted to break the law and be “PUFFERS” (puffer n. an automobile left unattended and running in cold weather). Last year hundreds of people had their vehicles’ stolen while they were left running unattended. The Denver Police Department is strongly encouraging the citizens of Denver not to become “Puffers”. It doesn’t matter if you lock the doors while the car warms up, you are still a “Puffer”.   DR. AMY MARTIN NEW CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER Medical Examiner's Office Veteran Fills Post   Nancy Severson, Manager of Denver Environmental Health, announced that long-time forensic pathologist Dr. Amy Martin will be Denver’s new Chief Medical Examiner. Her appointment followed the resignation of Dr. Robert Whitmore, effective December 14.    “Dr. Martin is a talented, highly respected professional who has the background and knowledge to step into the position without missing a step,” Severson said. MILE HIGH MILLION - TREE BY TREE GROWS SUPPORT Cash and In-kind Donations Totaling More than $250,000 Received in Past Four Weeks   Tree by Tree – The Mile High Million (MHM) continues to grow as more than a half-dozen organizations have contributed to the initiative in the past month.   Most recently, XP Companies, Inc., announced that it has committed a minimum of 250 trees to the MHM over the next five years. XP is a Denver-based apparel/licensing company whose clients/partners include the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, United States Olympic Committee, Tour de France and many more. XP is currently working with all of the major sports leagues and universities to establish a "green program" of licensed apparel that is extremely eco-friendly. In making the donation, XP Companies’ president said that he is committed to help neutralize the impact of XP’s own carbon emissions and encourages other Colorado companies to do the same. DENVER BOTANIC GARDENS AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS GRANT $30,000 Grant Enables Gardens to Collaborate with Area Universities   Thanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, Denver Botanic Gardens is now developing a new, high-tech way of sharing information on plant life in the Rocky Mountain region. The project, entitled “Denver Botanic Gardens and Partners: An On-line Herbarium for Rocky Mountain Flora”, includes collaboration partners Colorado State University, the University of Colorado, and the University of Wyoming in the development of an on-line herbarium of plants of the Rocky Mountain area.        Archives         Headlines      1 2
