Office of Cultural Affairs host free community reception February 27
Mayor John Hickenlooper, the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs and the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs are pleased to announce the 2006 recipients of the Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. The 2006 honorees are
Fiesta Colorado, PlatteForum and Dianne Perry Vanderlip. (More information on the honorees is included below.)
The 2006 Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts reception wad held on
Tuesday, February 27, 2007, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the
Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex (14th & Curtis). Mayor Hickenlooper presented the awards to the honorees at the event. Mistress of Ceremonies will be
Tamara Banks, journalist and broadcast personality.
The evening featuredperformances by some of Denver’s finest talent. Kim Robards Dance (a modern dance troupe) and Elements of Motion (a break dancing crew) battled it out on stage in a unique and exciting combined performance. Youth from PlatteForum participated in the program by painting live and reciting poetry. Denver Poet Laureate Chris Ransick also read a selection.
Since 1986, the Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts annually recognize individuals and organizations that make significant and lasting contributions to the arts in the City and County of Denver.
2006 Recipients of the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts:
Fiesta Colorado
For over 30 years, Fiesta Colorado has used music and dance as a means to preserve the cultural traditions of the Spanish and Mexican performing arts. The group provides positive opportunities for children to contribute and understand the rich Latino heritage. Fiesta Colorado consists of three troupes—Ballet Folklorico de Fiesta Colorado, Colorado Flamenco Society and Danzantes de Colores—as well as education outreach programs. The organization is dedicated to its mission of education and entertainment and is an important part of the cultural fabric in the Denver area.
PlatteForum
PlatteForum was founded in 2002 as a response to the critical need for arts education in public schools and for at-risk youth. The non-profit organization’s mission is to give underserved youth the opportunity to work side-by-side with master artists to create and present new works which foster personal and community growth. Utilizing small groups and intensive workshops led by renowned artists, these creative endeavors culminate in a finished work, presented to the public through exhibitions and performances
Dianne Perry Vanderlip
Dianne Perry Vanderlip is the founding Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Denver Art Museum. Since 1978, Vanderlip has raised the funds and support to build a collection numbering over 7,000 works. She retires as the first Curator Emeritus at the Denver Art Museum. Through her incredible career and work, Vanderlip has brought national and international attention to the Denver arts community and most importantly a chance for the community to experience world-class works of art.
