GOCO Grant Awarded For Trail
Improvements Along Cherry Creek In Denver
 
Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) has awarded a grant of $725,000 for trail improvements along the section of the Cherry Creek Greenway between Cook Park  to Garland Park.  This long-anticipated enhancement will construct a concrete bicycle-pedestrian trail along the only remaining “non-channel” section of the Cherry Creek Greenway and will eliminate six “at grade crossings”.

 In the spirit of Earth Day, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper announced the Take Five Environmental Pledge. The Take Five Pledge includes five simple steps Denver residents can take for a better environment.
 
“The choices we make in our daily lives can have a huge impact on our use of resources as individuals and as a community,” said Hickenlooper.
New Flower Honors Denver’s 150th Anniversary
Denver Daisy legacy project from Denver Botanic Gardens/Plant Select
 
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has unveiled the Denver Daisy, a one-of-a-kind flower created and named in honor of the City’s 150th anniversary.    “If we plant the Daisy this spring, our City will be awash in color ...The Denver Daisy will be among our more visible legacies for us and for future generations.”

Sewald brings 12 years of City experience to his new role.  Five of those have been with City Auditor Dennis Gallagher as Director ofGovernment and Community Affairs and Mayor/Council Liaison. Prior to that, Sewald served seven years in the administration of Mayor Wellington Webb.

City Retains Nationally Known Emergency Planner
Will Direct Democratic National Convention Planning
 
Mayor John Hickenlooper has hired internationally renowned emergency management veteran Ellis M. Stanley, Sr., as Director of Democratic National Convention Planning for the City’s Office of Emergency Management. 
 
Stanley will oversee the City’s overall integrated emergency management and business continuity plans for Democratic National Convention, and will coordinate related training efforts.

Youth Curfew Warms-up with Weather
Denver will intensified enforcement of its Citywide Youth Curfew all Summer. Ordinance requires  youth 17 years of age and younger must be off the street on Friday and Saturday nights before midnight from 12:01 a.m. through 5:00 a.m., and Sunday through Thursday nights, between 11:01 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.  Youth can be cited with a municipal violation for violating the curfew

Denver Selected as a Solar America City
Award Recognizes Denver’s Commitment, Comprehensive Approach
 
The United States Department of Energy will provide up to $2.4 million to 12 selected cities. Denver was chosen for its commitment and comprehensive approach to the deployment of solar technologies and the development of sustainable solar infrastructures.     “It  is a great honor for Denver,” Mayor Hickenlooper said, “it affirms all we have accomplished under our Greenprint Denver action agenda, and it provides funding for us to accomplish even more".

Denver Public Works needs your help to keep Denver clean! Citywide seasonal street sweeping has begun.  This year a new free reminder service is available. Denver to Launch Biennial of the Americas
$2 Million Grant From Boettcher Foundation For Landmark Arts Program
 
In the historic tradition of Venice and Sao Paolo, the world’s newest international contemporary art biennial is coming to Denver.   Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has announced the city has received a $2 million grant from the Boettcher Foundation to help launch the Mile High City’s inaugural Biennial of the Americas.    
 
Starting in 2010, festival projects and events will integrate arts into the civic life of Mile High City and Rocky Mountain region.
New Director of Housing and Neighborhood Development
Will Provide Strategic Direction of Community Development Efforts
 
Denver's Office of Economic Development (OED), has announced the appointment of Terrance Ware as OED’s director of Housing and Neighborhood Development.    “From TREX planning, to the redevelopment of Stapleton Airport and Villa Italia Mall, Terrance has an incredible track record in land development, planning, architecture and urban design said Andre Pettigrew, OED's Executive Director. His talents will help our Office with further developing viable urban neighborhoods, while expanding economic opportunities.”
