The prosecution of animal cruelty cases is serious business at the Denver DA’s Office.  Why do people abuse animals?  What should happen to them?  Chief Deputy DA Diane Balkin, a national expert in animal abuse, join Denver DA Mitch Morrissey on this edition of Dialogue: Denver DA

  • For cases outside of Denver, call your local law enforcement agency or in an emergency dial 9-1-1
  • For non-emergency questions you can call the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter at 303-698-0076
  • 75 % of animal abusers are male.
  • Most animal abusers are adults (19 and older) at 77%.  Only 1% of animal abusers are under 13.
  • Most animals suffering abuse are companion animals.  Farm animals are the second most abused.

False.  As with any criminal charge a defendant may plead guilty and avoid trial.  However, it is true that a guilty plea agreement in an alcohol-related case must be to an alcohol-related charge..
