Please welcome our 2005 Environmental Champions!

Denver Solid Waste Management Employees “Rethink Recycling”- The implementation of the “Rethink Recycling” single-stream automation expansion of the Denver Recycles’ program in October 2005 required an across the board effort of all employees and a shift in work program priorities to place 11,000 (and increasing) new carts on the street. The new approach has resulted in an 18% increase by weight in recycling tonnage already.

Denver Zoo Staff for Water Conservation Excellence - The Zoo has reduced campus-wide water consumption by 67% over the past few years. At the Flamingo Pond, consumption decreased from 20 million to one million gallons/year through design modification, and innovations in aeration, water recirculation and bio-filtration using native plants to clean the water as it re-circulates.

Natural Areas Staff - Gayle Weinstein, Kaye Reed, Libbe Lucero, Mary Lucero, Michelle LeMahieu, Darrell McHone, Felipe Romero, Ruby Montelongo, Charles Whigham, Tim Garcia - This team leverages resources and partnerships, including dedicated volunteers, to protect indigenous species and improve Denver’s outdoor environment with minimal use of natural resources such as irrigation on over 3000 acres. Innovative use of goats and hot water steam minimizes the need for pesticides.
