EMS Success Stories
In the numbers: DIA and the Denver Mint

Succes Across Denver

This list is just the beginning of some great accomplishments in 2008:

  • Installed E-85 fueling system at Roslyn facility in order to improve efficiency and “greening” of city fleet; E-85 is an alternative fuel that burns cleaner than gasoline.
  • Doubled the number of vehicles in the City fleet that are retrofitted with emissions-control technology which reduces the release of harmful emissions.
  • Increased the use of asphalt that contains reclaimed asphalt pavement by 61% from 2007 to 2008, to 34,770 tons.
  • Completed update of Denver greenhouse gas inventory, this provides baseline numbers which Denver can use in order to measure its performance.
  • Developed and promoted “green” (environmentally preferable) purchasing guidelines for City agencies.
  • Pilot project implemented in Environmental Health to save energy and paper by reducing personal printers by 30% with a  targeted 25% City-wide reduction for 2009
  • Engines Off Program (anti-idling)
    • Working at 3 metro schools to reduce idling and associated AQ problems (Swansea in Denver; 1 in JeffCo; 1 in Boulder Co.)
    • Pilot program to stop vehicle idling at Convention Center reduced idling from 81% of total number of vehicles to 45% (buses, semis, shuttles).  Done in partnership with Emily Griffith Opportunity School and CCC.
  • PV system installed at Colorado Convention Center
  • Switched to Green Seal certified cleaning products at the Colorado Convention Center
  • Conserved water by replacing inefficient toilets and urinals in multiple City facilities and xeriscaping bluegrass areas at the Lowry Child Care Center and Colorado Convention Center
    • At the CCC, the grass conversion was estimated to save 1.5 AF or ~500,000 gallons of water per year.  And the toilets that were replaced save 1.5 gallons per flush and the urinals save 2.5 gallons per flush from the older fixtures.
  • Single stream recycling and composting implemented at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and the Denver Coliseum
    • At the Coliseum almost 100 tons were diverted from the landfill (37% of total waste -- 21% composted, and 16% recycled)
    • The Convention Center diverted 331 tons of waste from the landfill (28% of total waste -- 11% composted, 17% recycled)
    • At Red Rocks 165 tons were diverted from the landfill (78% of total waste! -- 17% composted, 61% recycled)
  • Increased transit ridership at Denver Zoo by providing ECO-Passes for all employees
  • Best Workplaces for Commuters
    • DEH, CSA and Greenprint led the effort to get the City and County of Denver registered in the Best Workplaces for Commuters.  This recognition means that the CCD provides specific services, including a Guaranteed Ride Home, to make us a commuter-friendly workplace.

From the purchase of retread tires to the conversion to LED traffic lights, Denver has already experienced many environmental successes.  More of these success stories will be posted to this site as the EMS continues to unfold.
