COBRA is a federal law that allows certain employees and dependents to continue their group health coverage under the City's plan for:
- Up to 18 months for employees, spouse and dependents when the loss of coverage is due to a termination or reduction of hours.
- Up to 29 months for employees who are determined as disabled by Social Security at any time during the first 60 days of COBRA coverage.
- Up to 36 months for spouses and dependents when the loss of coverage is due to an employee's death, divorce or legal separation, or other qualifying events.
When a qualifying event occurs, employees and dependents will receive a letter informing them of their rights and enrollment options under COBRA.
If your loss of coverage is due to an involuntary termination of employment, you may be eligible for a reduction of your COBRA premiums.
