The City and County of Denver’s Amendments to the 2003 International Fire Code include a requirement that all those whom install, design, add to, modify, inspect, test, perform maintenance and repair of fire protection systems, fire alarm systems and portable fire extinguishers, must have current licenses issued by the Denver Fire Department. Anyone installing / inspecting these systems in the City and County of Denver will be required to hold a current license for the calendar year. An apprentice doing this work is not required to hold a license, but is required to be registered with the Denver Fire Department. (Refer to area under “licensing program” for apprentice definition).
In 2008-9, Denver will add licensing for an additional three disciplines: Radio Enhancements Systems, Fire Pumps and Ammonia / Refrigerant Systems. Announcement will follow on this web page when program is complete and applicants will be required to test.
Effective immediately, each new license and apprentice registration card is laminated and comes with a lanyard for wearing around the neck, or a clip to attach the license to a shirt or jacket pocket. The lanyard is of breakaway design for safety purposes. The license may be slipped into a pocket when doing work where a hanging license could be in the way, but it must be kept visible at all times while on the job site.
Anyone who already holds a license or registration card that is not laminated, may bring it in to Fire Headquarters at 745 West Colfax Avenue, and have laminated and hung on a lanyard.
If you have any questions related to the Denver Department of Safety licensing program, or you would like an application faxed, mailed or emailed to you, or you would like to schedule testing, please contact the Fire Prevention and Investigation Division at 720-913-3465. An application must be completed and submitted to schedule an exam..
