2012 Earth Day Fair

2012 Earth Day Fair

The City & County of Denver’s Department of Environmental Health hosted Denver’s 2012 Earth Day Fair on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 from 10 AM- 2 PM in the plaza in front of Denver City & County Building Plaza @ 1437 Bannock St. This event, sponsored by 97.3 KBCO radio station, was FREE and open to the general public. We especially encouraged residents, employees, teachers, and students in or near downtown Denver to stop. We featured businesses and nonprofit organizations who provide conservation services, equipment, and other resources OR who have made these investments themselves. In addition, several City agencies were represented. See the “Confirmed Earth Day 2012 Participants” link on the right for a complete list of contributors.

The theme of Denver’s 2012 Earth Day Fair was “SAVINGS for your wallet and our planet.”  The Earth Day Fair highlighted the actions and investments that residents and businesses can make to save money and reduce their impact on the environment. These WIN-WIN SAVINGS activities include reducing consumption of energy, fuel, and water. Mayor Hancock and the Manager of Denver Environmental Health, Doug Linkhart, also gave awards to businesses that have made exceptional strides to make their operations environmentally sustainable or contribute to the environmental sustainability of the Denver community.

We were excited that Denver’s 2012 Earth Day Fair was the first large-scale, City-sponsored Zero Waste event with recycling and composting services provided by Denver Solid Waste Management and Denver Recycles. There are links on the right to the simple, 1-page references for the Denver Recycles Guide and Denver Composting Guide that all food truck businesses and exhibitors followed. We’re so proud that our 1st Zero Waste event was successful, thanks to the leadership of Tom & Becky from Denver Recycles and the terrific volunteers, Tom, Phillip, Carolyne, Vince, Laura, Stacy, and Steve!

RESULTS:
1+ bin of compost
2 1/2 bins of recycling
1/3 bin of trash

History of Earth Day
Each year, Earth Day – April 22nd – marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement. The first Earth Day in 1970 was celebrated by more than 20 million Americans. They held massive coast-to-coast rallies in the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Groups that had been fighting against the deterioration of the environment – oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, the extinction of wildlife – suddenly realized they shared common values.

April 22, 2012 marks the 42nd anniversary of the grassroots fair that inspired a nation to reflect upon the Earth and their impact on it. Each year, the City & County of Denver hosts an Earth Day Fair during a week day to educate and engage Denver residents about the ways that we can protect our natural resources for future generations and celebrate our successes with innovative local projects and companies.
