Curb and Gutter Inventory Project Minimize
The Curb and Gutter Inventory Project began in September of 2001. The goal of the project is to develop an inventory of the all street subsystem assets in the City. These assets include curb and gutter, sidewalks, curb ramps, and inlets. Also being noted are the locations of alley and driveways. A visual condition assessment of all assets being inventoried is being conducted in conjunction with the inventory. Ultimately, the data will be used by the Infrastructure Management Office to help program repair projects throughout the City.

It is estimated that there is approximately 3030 miles of curb and gutter in the City of Denver. Due to the large amount of data to be generated by project, a special voice activated, Global Positioning System (GPS) was purchased by the City from Datria Systems Inc, based in Englewood Colorado.

The system utilizes a small computer, GPS receiver, and headset that are attached to a backpack worn by the inspector. The inspector calls out commands that are translated by specialized software into database items. The GPS system records the location of the assets inventoried and all of the information gathered is eventually downloaded to a master database at the City.

Interns from the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) are performing the inspection of the curb and gutter for the City. The University side of the project is led by Dr. Kevin Rens, an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at UCD. The project and the student interns were recently featured in a story that aired on Channel 2 News.    View Channel 2 story
