Lost, Stolen or Damaged Plates

  • My license plate for the front of my vehicle is missing. Am I required to have a front plate?
Yes, Colorado requires that all vehicles have a front and back plate.
  • Is there a charge to replace lost, stolen or damaged plate(s)?  
There will be a nominal fee for any plate replacement depending on the type of vehicle. 
 Regular Colorado Plates (two plates) cars, trucks, etc.  $8.06
 Regular Colorado Plate (single plate) Trailers, SMM $6.17

  • What information is required to replace my missing plate(s)?
Please bring your most recent Colorado Registration/Ownership Tax Receipt, proof of insurance and a form of photo identification into one of our Denver Motor Vehicle branch office locations and our Compliance Agents will be happy to assist you in replacing your missing plates.

  • What is required if my plates are stolen? 
  • Complete and sign a DR 2283 lost or stolen license plate/permits affidavit indicating that the license plates were in fact, stolen.  A signature is required from one owner.
  •  File a police report with the local law enforcement agency to report the plates as stolen.
  •  Submit the DR 2283 form to the local county motor vehicle office for cancellation of plates at the county level.
