Canadian Used Vehicles

  1. Canadian Current Registration and Statement

Canada's proof of ownership is a current registration only, not a title. Lines are not indicated. Canada will accept a current registration from an American state for registration. A person could have a negotiable Canada registration and a United States title. Therefore, a Statement of Fact (DR2444) is required stating there is no title in existence.

Canadian used vehicle, the following is required:

  1. Secure and Verifiable Identification is required. Anyone other than a named owner must have a DR2175, Non-secure power of attorney to obtain license plates on behalf of a named owner and present his/her secure and verifiable identification.
  2. Current Canadian registration
  3. Original signed bill of sale from owner to purchaser. (Owner on foreign document must show a foreign address. If an American address is shown on the foreign document, they must establish title in their name before transferring ownership.)
  4. DR 2395 Verification of Vehicle Identification Numer Inspection
  5. US Department of Transportation importation declaration form HS-7. Or: NHTSA Bond Release Letter (copy acceptable).
  6. DR2444 (Statement of fact of no title or liens in existence).

B. Canadian MSO's

Different countries receive different MSO's from the manufacturer of a new vehicle, depending upon the specific requirements for that country.

On the following page is a copy of what Polk's Foreign Vehicle Registration Manual, shows as a Canadian MSO.

Upon exportation of a new vehicle from Canada, the following is required:

  1. Secure and Verifiable Identification is required. Anyone other than a named owner must have a DR2175, Non-secure power of attorney to obtain license plates on behalf of a named owner and present his/her secure and verifiable identification.
  2. NVIS (New Vehicle Information Statement)
  3. Original signed bill of sale from dealership to purchaser.
  4. DR 2395 Verification of Vehicle Identification Numer Inspection
  5. US Department of Transportation importation declaration form HS-7. Or: NHTSA Bond Release Letter (copy acceptable).
  6. DR2444 (Statement of Fact of no title or liens in existence.

C. Owner may be required at a later date to show proof of conformity. (CUSTOMS ENTRY, DOT AND EPA)

The US Customs Service has several types of entry. Each is documented with a different form. These are customs entry documents but are not acceptable in place of HS-7 or Bond Release letter.

CF 7523 Entry and Manifest of Merchandise Free of Duty
CF3299 Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles
CF3311 Declaration for Free Entry of Returned American Products
CF7501 Entry Summary (Does not require a Customs Inspector's signature)
CF6059B Customs Declaration (Badge number instead of signature)
