House Bill 1209 mandated the creation of a data base containing the insurance status of all motorists.

Since July 1, 1999, Motor Vehicle is required to verify that a citizen has valid insurance before issuing registrations or plates.

Insurance companies are required by law to transmit necessary information to the data base by the seventh (7) of each month.

The data base is maintained by the Colorado Department of Revenue. They will be sending letters to the owner of any vehicle they are unable to verify the insurance status for. If you receive a letter from the Colorado Department of Revenue, compare the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on your vehicle to your insurance card and to your registration that you were issued Denver Motor Vehicle.

The Vehicle Identification Number on your vehicle must match the Vehicle Identification Number on your insurance records and on your motor vehicle registration.

If the Vehicle Identification Number on your proof of insurance does not match your the Vehicle Identification Number on your vehicle, contact your insurance company to correct your insurance records.

If the Vehicle Identification Number on your motor vehicle registration does not match your the Vehicle Identification Number on your vehicle, contact the Denver Motor Vehicle help line at (720) 865-4600 for information regarding corrections to your vehicle registration.
