Civilian Conservation Corps

What does CCC have to do with Denver's mountain parks?
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a President Franklin D. Roosevelt work relief program instituted during the Great Depression employing young men to preserve the nation's natural resources. Shortly after Roosevelt took office, Congress authorized the CCC on March 31, 1933. Among many projects, the CCC Camp SP-13-C, company No. 1848, built the amphitheatre in Red Rocks Park between 1936 and 1941. These CCC members were fed and lodged in Army-style barracks situated near Morrison Park. The CCC existed for nine years. Today the CCC Camp is the headquarters for the Denver Mountain Parks District and remains as a reminder of the immeasurable contributions its members made to the nation and to Denver's mountain park system. Although the site is not open to the public, visitors are welcome at Red Rocks Park where a plaque lauds the living CCC spirit and recognizes the CCC "has left its heritage for America in the preservation of its resources for the enjoyment of all generations."
