Clermont Street Parkway

Clermont Street Parkway brings visitors from East 6th Avenue Parkway directly into the north terminus of Cranmer Park, on East 3rd Avenue. Clermont is another parkway example which physically connects public spaces: Cranmer Park, 6th Avenue Parkway, and Hill Middle School.

History

The original design of this short, four block parkway dates to 1911. George Ernest Cranmer, Manager of Improvements and Parks for the City, developed Mountain View Park (later renamed Cranmer Park) around 1920. Cranmer, whose home bordered the park, was fond of sweeping views, and declared trees obsolete as civic adornments.

Clermont Parkway is bordered by a single row of elms. Located only within the tree lawn, no street trees appear in the parkway median. The elm canopy remains largely intact, except adjacent to Hill Middle School, between 4th and 5th Avenues, where the elms have been removed. Honeylocusts have replaced the elms, but unfortunately the Honeylocusts are set back further from the roadway, thus detracting from the original intent of the parkway and canopy design.
