4th Avenue Parkway

East 4th Avenue Parkway extends for one block to the west from the south terminus of Williams Street Parkway. This short parkway serves as a connection between Cheesman Park to the north and the historic neighborhoods of the Country Club District to the south.

History

A large treelawn of 51' borders the parkway on the north side, which serves as a buffer of green space between the traffic and residential homes. Ponderosa Pine crowd this tract, providing evergreen foliage to the parkway. North of the pines are American Elm, planted in a straight line, contrasting with the informal planting of pines. This was originally intended to give a layering effect to the tree lawn. Mission style monuments identify the entry to the Country Club neighborhoods along Gilpin. Large overhanging caps top these unique features which include arched pedestrian entries along the sidewalk.

Historic Evolution

Visual clutter, i.e. signs, utilities, paved medians, and fire hydrants give a busy appearance to this historical parkway. 4th Avenue Parkway is so short, the integrity is lost by simple distractions. An attempt has been made to identify this tract as an historic parkway through the use of a single bollard. The effort should be applauded, as the education of the public and the residents is the most important step in preserving Denver's historic parkways, however, the execution needs to be consistent along all historic parkways in Denver.
