Cold Case Success
Thursday, June 08, 2006 (11 reads)

Det. Barb Wimmer of the Denver Police Department Cold Case Unit attended the sentencing today on a sexual assault suspect identified as Federico E. Candelaria.  Frederico Candelaria was charged with the rape of a 13-year-old female almost 8 years ago.  Due to the Sex Assault Cold Case Project and the ability to rely upon the expertise of our Crime Lab personnel, DNA evidence connected the suspect to the victim.  The suspect was 17 when he allegedly raped the victim.  The victim was asleep in a basement bedroom when the suspect gained entry into the house, went into the victim’s bedroom, and then sexually assaulted her.  At the time, the victim could not identify her attacker and he was able to flee the scene.  In December of 2005 information was received that there was a DNA match.  Det. Barb Wimmer with the Cold Case Project then proceeded to successfully work the case, once again contacting the victim speaking with her many times and reviewing all the information from the original case file.  Det. Wimmer then presented her findings to the D.A’s office.  The D.A’s office was able to successfully present this case in court and the suspect was charged with First Degree Sexual Assault and Second Degree Burglary and then ultimately today the suspect was sentenced to 27 years behind bars.

The suspect was in prison when he was required to submit a DNA sample that was entered into the FBI’s DNA database, the Combined DNA Indexing System.  This 1998 case was reviewed as part of the DNA Cold Case Project which consists of the Denver Police Department Crime Lab, Denver Police Department Investigators and prosecutors from the D.A’ s office.

Another example of a victim who can now have a sense of satisfaction knowing that her attacker will be put away for many years and justice was ultimately served.
