Thanks to Denver voters' support of the Better Denver Bond Program, a new Denver Municipal Animal Shelter will be built in 2011.  The new shelter will help us more fully achieve our goals and mission to protect animal and human health and safety, and animal welfare. The new Shelter will be located at 1271 W. Bayaud (Platte/Navajo), a short distance from the existing shelter.

The new facility will have many benefits:
   ·  Bigger - The shelter will be 35,900 sq feet - bigger than the current building
   ·  More convenient - Offering more services under one roof
   ·  More enjoyable surroundings -  For people and animals
   ·  Better care – New equipment, technology & accommodations to ensure humane care
 
Features & Services of the New Facility:
   ·  People and animal- friendly pet adoption spaces, with “real life” rooms for dogs, enriched cat condos, and cat colony rooms.
   ·  Separate spaces for dogs versus cats; and for impound versus lost & found animals.
   ·  Separate lobbies for adoption services and lost & found/relinquishment services.
   ·  Natural daylighting throughout the building focusing on animal areas.
   ·  Education/ Community room.
   ·  Medical isolation areas.
   ·  State of the art spay/ neuter clinic.
   ·  Dedicated, well-located area for animal control vehicles.
   ·  Convenient staff areas and service areas throughout.
   ·  Green building on-track for LEED Silver Certification.
 
Bigger Capacity for Animals
The new shelter will have over twice the capacity to house and care for animals:
   ·  Dog Housing Provided:  163
   ·  Cat Housing Provided: 124
   ·  Urban Wildlife / Small Mammals:  20
   ·  Total Capacity:  307

Location
The new shelter, located at 1271 West Bayaud
(Between Platte River Dive and Navajo), is only a short distance away from the current shelter. Once the new shelter is complete all the animal shelter operations will move to the new site.
