"No Mow" Areas
Increasing Biodiversity
Welcome to the home of Denver Parks & Recreation's “Sustainable Parks Initiative!" This is the first step in a new Parks program to study different ways to reduce resource consumption.

There are several test areas planned for this fall within the parks system.  These areas have been selected based on the existing use patterns and maintenance requirements.  Three types of conservation areas are being tested at this time:

Mulch areas
: Rings of mulch around trees will be enlarged to incorporate clusters of trees.

“No-Mow” areas
: Carefully reviewed areas will be designated “no-mow” zones. Steep slopes that are difficult or dangerous to maintain are the primary candidates as well as edges of waterways with similar issues.

Natural Landscaping
: Native and sustainable plants will be introduced into passive-use areas.

Benefits of these three treatments will include:
    • Protecting trees from mower damage;
    • Improving soil texture and fertility;
    • Reducing water consumption;
    • Reducing pesticide usage (especially around lake edges);
    • Increasing plant and wildlife diversity within parks by improving habitat; and
    • Reducing CO2 emissions from mowers.
Feel free to send us your photos and feedback about these areas as you are part of this program as well!

These "Conservation Test Area" signs will advertise the program near the test sites in the months and years to come.
