2010 Service Changes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 28, 2009

REMINDER ABOUT 2010 SERVICE CHANGES

FROM DENVER PUBLIC WORKS SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Overflow Trash Collection

Overflow trash collection in barrel service areas collected by Denver Public Works Solid Waste Management will take place once every three weeks starting January. The week after Christmas we will still pick up all overflow collection in barrel service areas before switching to this new schedule in 2010. Previously, overflow trash collection in barrel service areas took place on a weekly basis.

Overflow trash is any household trash placed outside of the City-issued black trash barrel and collected by a separate truck.  A limit of 10 overflow bags or containers (no large than 32 gallons in size) will be picked up per collection.  Barrel overflow service does not collect large items like mattresses and furniture. Only about 30% of Denver residents have barrel service and are affected by this service change.

Important reminders about barrel collection:

·        Set out your city issued trash barrel in the flow line of the gutter or on the designated side of the alley, leaving at least four feet of clearance on either side from other containers, parked cars, lamp posts, trees, mailboxes, etc., so the automated truck can access the container.

·        Please fill the container to its maximum capacity with household trash.

·        If necessary, you may set out additional trash in heavy duty trash bags or cans (32 gallons or less) only during your scheduled overflow week collection (once every three weeks).

·        Please store your 100-gallon barrel and any other trash containers out of public view on non collection days.

·        Residents not already participating in the recycling program are encouraged to sign up for Denver’s free recycling service.  Participating in the recycling program can significantly reduce the need for overflow trash collection. Sign up online at: http://www.denvergov.org/NewCustomerSignUp/tabid/425352/Default.aspx

Large Item Pickup
Large Item Pickup (LIP) collection service for Denver residents that have trash collection service from Denver Public Works Solid Waste Management will take place once every nine weeks  starting January 1.  Previously, LIP collection took place once every five weeks. A limit of five large items per household (items such as furniture and mattresses) may be set out per LIP cycle.

Important reminders about LIP collection:

·        LIP items should be set out by 7 AM according to collection schedule based on type of trash service.

·        LIP items should be placed four feet away from the trash cans, dumpsters or other obstructions (recycling carts, cars, poles, mailboxes, etc).

·        A maximum of five large items (furniture, etc.) will be collected per LIP cycle (every nine weeks) per household.

For more information on LIP collection, including schedule information, please call 311 or visit:

Please remember, the City of Denver does not charge for any of these services.

Post-holiday collection schedule

Post-holiday collection will take place on a holiday schedule: Trash and recycling will not be collected on Friday, Jan. 1. Both trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day for all Denver residents following the holiday closure. Collections scheduled for Friday, Jan. 1, 2010 will instead be picked up on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010.
