Botanic Gardens
Botanic Gardens The lifeblood of the Botanic Gardens, our irrigation system, was installed in 1963. The main line for the system is composed primarily of asbestos and clay pipe buried 9 feet below the surface. These aged pipes experienced nine breaks in 2006 alone. Bond funds are being used to replace the entire structure, stopping water loss and giving staff concise control over the amount of water used throughout the Gardens. In addition, improvements to ADA accessibility are also part of the upgrades. Work on the irrigation improvements began mid-year 2008 and was completed in spring of 2009. Approximately 6,000 liner feet of new mainline was installed, which included irrigation lines and a conduit for electrical, fiber and telephone wires. Some access improvements have also been completed.
A new, publically accessible Greenhouse is being built with bond funds to replace and existing old greenhouse. The new facility will include a spectacular two-story orchid house and an orangerie. Demolition of the old greenhouse is now underway. Completion of the new greenhouse is anticipated before summer of 2010.
