  • The following information is a checklist of requirements to obtain a permit for a Solar Photovoltaic System or Solar Panel to a single unit dwelling or duplex within the City and County of Denver.   The following information is required depending on proposed construction.    
  1. Read Building Policy IRC M2301  for Solar Hot Water Panel Systems and Solar Photovoltaic Systems.
  2. Check to make sure your proposed project is in compliance with your neighborhood covenants and homeowner's association specifications
  3. To verify a Zone District, go to Denver Maps.   For Zoning information to design your project, go to Municode; and under Chapter 59 is the Zoning Ordinance. 
  4. The City of Denver Landmark Preservation protects structures and districts of historical, architectural or geographic significance. It strictly regulates use and development on a landmark or within a historic district which may affect the plans for your project.
  5. Denver has height restrictions in several areas to protect View Planes in strategic points in the city. The procedure to obtain a permit for a solar system is as follows: 
  6. Zoning Form 21, visit the Zoning Web page or contact the Zoning counter at 720-865-3000, or  zoningreview@denvergov.org.
  7. Name of system manufacturer, model name or number of system.
  8. Details showing mounting of panels. Engineer’s design required when panels are not flush mounted on roof. Calculations performed by a Colorado registered professional engineer shall be submitted to the Division to substantiate that the structure can support the design loads specified in Chapter 16 of the IBC and DBCA. Details and calculations for the panel connections to the roof shall be included.
  9. A ladder must be provided at the time of the inspection for all roof mounted installations.
