Let’s take a look at the North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative (NDCC)!

In an effort to bring unity to an array of projects in North Denver, we have created the North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative (NDCC). Mayor Hancock and Denver City Council agree that all of the planning efforts and redevelopment projects included in this initiative need to be supported and that is why funding the NDCC is #3 on City Council’s list of 2014 Budget Priorities.

The NDCC is comprised of six major projects in north Denver:  The completion of the Elyria-Swansea and Globeville Neighborhood plans, long-term visions for the National Western Stock Show and the Denver Coliseum, Interstate 70 reconstruction, RTD Fastracks development, and Brighton Boulevard and River North development.  Below you will find a brief description of these projects and links to more in-depth information.

Last week’s blog post discussed the role of the Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) in neighborhood planning.  The NDCC is coordinating with CPD to ensure that the Elyria-Swansea Globeville Neighborhood Plans preserve the history of these neighborhoods, while preparing for the major projects that will increase the connectivity of these neighborhoods to Metro Denver.

NDCC is collaborating with the National Western Stock Show (NWSS), Denver Arts & Venues, and Visit Denver, among others to guide the redevelopment of the NWSS and the Denver Coliseum to ensure the long-term operation of these iconic Denver facilities.  Be part of this discussion by attending Councilwoman Judy Montero’s Community Conversation on August 22, 2013 from 6pm-8pm at the National Western Complex Hall of Education Building.

The 1-70 reconstruction is led by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), but the project brings together Denver Public Works, Parks & Recreation,  and Denver Public Schools, just to name a few.  NDCC’s collaboration is to ensure thoughtful improvements and more importantly, the connectivity of Denver neighborhoods.  Currently, CDOT and Denver are investigating the feasibility of constructing a sunken highway with large covers to provide neighborhood access and green space for a portion of the I-70 corridor.  Click here to see a conceptual vision of this design.

The NDCC is coordinating with the Regional Transportation District - FasTracks project during the construction of the East Corridor light rail line to Denver International Airport and the North Metro light rail line to the northern Suburbs.  With these new rail lines come opportunities for transit oriented development and the NDCC will play a role in planning for and developing these improvements.

The River North Neighborhood, known by locals as RiNo, is a trendy neighborhood with a thriving arts scene located along the Platte River and Brighton Boulevard.  Check out the RiNo First Friday art walks to see this neighborhood’s development potential.
