New fellowship will increase student involvement in election process
(Denver) – The inaugural class of the groundbreaking Colorado Elections Fellows Program will meet at the Denver Elections Division on Friday, October 23. Ten fellows will be trained to serve as poll workers and will also recruit other students to serve as poll workers in future elections.
“Our partners in academia and in the grassroots community should be applauded for their hard work and their commitment to involving students in civic engagement,” said Denver Clerk and Recorder Stephanie O’Malley. “This program will eventually be statewide in its scope and we are looking forward to having the participation of other colleges and additional counties as the Colorado Election Fellows Program expands.”
The Denver Elections Division will provide training materials and other resources to help the fellows train other student poll workers on their campuses. The Colorado Campus Compact at Regis University will administer the grant funds.
The Colorado Election Fellows Program is a collaboration spearheaded by Theresa Cusimano of Colorado Campus Compact and Jenny Flanagan from Colorado Common Cause, Susan Sterrett, University of Denver Professor; Lissa Gallagher, Director of the Experiential Learning Center at the University of Colorado at Denver; Tony Robinson, Associate Professor of Political Science at UCD; Joe Halter, Internship Advisor at UCD; Robert Preuhs, Metropolitan State College of Denver Professor; and the Denver Elections Division.
The Colorado Campus Compact at Regis University was one of 13 organizations in the United States to receive grant funds from the federal Election Assistance Commission to recruit college students to serve as poll workers during the 2009 and 2010 election cycles.
The fellows, along with fellows coordinator Elena Nunez and project coordinator Lauren Alweis, will arrive at 1 p.m. to receive an overview of Denver elections processes and will tour the facility at 3 p.m. Members of the media are welcome to attend the 1 p.m. kickoff and the 3 p.m. tour.
