(Denver) – This Thursday, May 22, is the day the Denver Elections Division travels lock, stock and voting machine to its new, larger quarters.
The new offices are located at 3888 E. Mexico Ave., just west of the intersection of Colorado Blvd. and Mexico Ave., one block north of the I-25 and Colorado Blvd. interchange.
The division’s main voter assistance number, 720-913-VOTE (8683), will be staffed during business hours as usual during the move. The customer service desk for walk-in assistance will be staffed all day Thursday at the old location, 303 W. Colfax Ave. The customer service desk will be staffed at the new location starting at 8 a.m. on Friday morning.
The 37,000 square-foot building on E. Mexico Ave. will also accommodate the division’s warehouse operations, currently located at 38th and York.
The new facility has much more space to more efficiently accommodate elections activities:
¨ more efficient flow of ballot processing
¨ room for more ballot counting machines
¨ more workers to process ballots
¨ room for on-site poll worker training
¨ a large lobby for voter registration, and to serve as an early voting site
¨ better transparency for public viewing of ballot counting activities
¨ customer parking
The new building does not represent an increase in leasing costs for the division, as the new lease is the same annual cost as was the 38th and York warehouse, $250,000. Two months of free rent was negotiated, offsetting the cost of adding an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant restroom and ramp. The layout of the new building is already configured in a way that facilitates ballot handling, so the facility required minimal construction which helped to keep move-in costs down. The new facility is also convenient to RTD bus lines.
“This is a big step forward for elections in Denver,” said Clerk and Recorder Stephanie O’Malley. “It is our intention to provide Denver voters with a high-quality elections operation. That was simply not possible in the old facility. The November 2007 election showed us that clearly. Moving to our new location is an important milestone in our planning for the 2008 elections. That planning has been underway since last fall, and having this move behind us is essential to our ability to move forward and prepare for what is predicted to be a record voter turnout this year.”
