Lost Pets

If your pet is lost, the following list of resources may help you find your lost pet.

Lost pets brought to the Denver Animal Shelter without identification are held for five calendar days. Animals with identification are also held for five calendar days while their owners are contacted. You can view our pets online. Our database is updated daily. After the five day hold, animals will be evaluated for adoption or transfer.

If you're visiting our shelter in search of your lost pet and you do not see your pet, please ask our front office staff for assistance to determine if your pet is in a location not accessible to the public. The front office staff can view pictures of all animals in the shelter to include animals in our quarantine area that is off limits to the public.

If your pet is at Denver Animal Shelter , visit the Redemption Process and Fees page for information about reclaiming your pet.

Found Pets

If you have found a lost pet in the City and County of Denver, you are welcome to bring the animal to Denver Animal Shelter during business hours. After regular business hours, the animal shelter provides 10 night drop-off boxes for found pets. The night drop-off boxes are located to the left of the shelter's Lost and Found entrance.

You must be 18 years of age and home for approximately two hours for an officer to respond. Animal protection officers will not be dispatched to pick up strays or stray holds after 9:00 p.m.

Prevent Lost Pets

Licensing your pet can be helpful if your pet becomes lost. Make sure your pet is always wearing a collar displaying their license tag, rabies tag, and ID tag.

Microchip implants are an excellent safeguard. In the event your pet loses their collar, the microchip information can be used to bring your pet home. Be sure to register your microchip and keep information current. Microchips are available at Denver Animal Shelter.

Obey the Denver leash laws and make sure that your pet is kept in a secure enclosure when not leashed.
