Foster Care Program

Want to help save a life of a shelter animal, but cannot commit to adoption – become a foster volunteer! Foster care is one of the best ways to help shelter animals by opening up your home and your heart to these animals in need. You will be rewarded with tail wags and purrs!

Foster kitty pictureAnimals that are sent to foster care need additional time before they can be adopted due to age, weight, or a medical condition. Types of foster animals include cats and dogs with a medical condition, kittens without a mother, and puppies with or without a mother. At certain times of the year, animals currently available for adoption may be sent to a foster home for a break from the shelter.

Yes! Many foster volunteers already have pets. The foster animals will need to have an area in your home that they can stay where they are separate from your pets. This could be a bathroom, laundry room, or guest room. If you are unsure where would be a good area in your home for the foster animals, contact our Foster Coordinator, Kayleigh (, and she can help you.

Just your time and love!  Denver Animal Shelter will provide your foster animal with any food, medications, bedding, bowls, and other necessary supplies when you pick up your foster animal.

The average length of stay for a foster animal is 2 weeks. However, this will vary based on the needs of the foster animal, and it can range from 1-6 weeks. You are able to take breaks from fostering whenever you need to, such as for a vacation.

It is easy to fall in love with your foster animal and want to keep it. You are doing a great service by fostering these animals in need, and if you do not adopt you will be able to help more animals in the long run. Think of it as being a foster animal “aunt or uncle” – foster animals are a great way to get the joys of having a pet without the commitment.
