Auditor O'Brien Wins Outstanding CPA Award

Auditor O'Brien accepts the AICPA award

Washington, D.C. – Auditor Timothy M. O’Brien, CPA, was honored with the national 2017 Outstanding CPA in Government Impact Award by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).  The award recognizes the impact of significant contributions to the efficiency, effectiveness, or innovative service delivery by CPAs in government.

AICPA Chair Kimberly Ellison-Taylor praised the “energy, talent, and integrity” shown by Auditor O’Brien and other award winners, calling it “vital in today’s government arena”.

The AICPA is the world’s largest member association representing the CPA profession, with more than 418,000 members in 143 countries, and a history of serving the public interest since 1887.

“Auditor O’Brien comes with a point of view solidly based in doing what’s best,” said Mary Medley, CEO of the Colorado Society of CPAs.  “Not only has he met and exceeded the Outstanding CPA in Government Impact Award criteria, but also he continues to serve at the highest professional level.”

After the award ceremony, Auditor O’Brien said, “I’m humbled by this recognition from CPAs throughout the nation. I see this award as a tribute to the excellence of my entire office.”

Auditor O’Brien has the distinction of being one of the first professional auditors in decades to be elected Denver Auditor.  In fact, when he took office, he was the only CPA in the office.  Since then, he’s hired more than a dozen CPAs and encouraged the acquisition of other professional credentials in other Auditor’s Office staff.  With 40 years of audit experience, including 11 years as Colorado’s Auditor, he has initiated integrated auditing to the Auditor’s Office, with financial, performance, and fraud detection analyses.
