To obtain Armed Status, you must be a licensed Merchant Guard (see Merchant Guard Individual for proper licensing procedures) in the City and County of Denver. The authority to carry firearms will not be extended to any person under twenty-one (21) years of age.
Note: Merchant Guard Armed Status authorization applies to open carry of a firearm only.
Policy Update Note:
As of October 2015, the Armed Status authorization period is active for 24 months. To maintain your authorization , you may renew every two (2) years from the date you were granted or renewed your Armed Status.
No fees required for armed status application.
Your armed status will be approved when:
All documents required for armed status are complete and submitted to the Executive Manager of Public Safety through the Department of Excise and Licenses.
Note: Please be aware that it may take up to 30 days for your Armed Status application to be approved.
Renew in Person
Come to the Department of Excise and Licenses office with all required documents.
Renew by Mail
Mail all of your required documents along with a copy of your current merchant guard, 8 ½ x 11” paper license.
