Merchant Guard (Armed Status)

To obtain Armed Status, you must be a licensed Merchant Guard (see Merchant Guard Individual for proper licensing procedures) in the City and County of Denver. The authority to carry firearms will not be extended to any person under twenty-one (21) years of age.

Note: Merchant Guard Armed Status authorization applies to open carry of a firearm only.

Policy Update Note:
As of October 2015, the Armed Status authorization period is active for 24 months. To maintain your authorization , you may renew every two (2) years from the date you were granted or renewed your Armed Status. 

How to Get Armed Status

No fees required for armed status application. 

Your armed status will be approved when:

All documents required for armed status are complete and submitted to the Executive Manager of Public Safety through the Department of Excise and Licenses.

  1. The Merchant Guard Company or business will be notified of the decision concerning firearm status. 
  2. You may return to the Department of Excise and Licenses to obtain your armed status identification card.

Note: Please be aware that it may take up to 30 days for your Armed Status application to be approved.

Renew in Person
Come to the Department of Excise and Licenses office with all required documents. 

Renew by Mail 
Mail all of your required documents along with a copy of your current merchant guard, 8 ½ x 11” paper license.

  • Copy of current Merchant Guard License
  • Letter of Request for  Merchant Guard Armed Status on company letterhead. Includes statements of need/suitability and an email address for the company’s point of contact to be notified upon approval.

  • Firearms Training Certification Example Proof of 8 hours training not required for renewalRange Live-Fire Proficiency Qualification Score (percentage) must be a minimum of 75% and must have been accomplished within the last 6 months.
  • National FBI Criminal Background check. (This cannot be more than 90 days old)
