We are a month into 2018 and we are off and running in the “FINE District 9”. I am excited this year to get to work and better serve the incredible residents of our district. Our office had a retreat a couple of weeks ago to get prepared for everything that is happening in 2018. It was a great opportunity to review 2017 and begin to dream about the possibilities for 2018. We took our dreams and transformed them into priorities. Fitzhugh Dodson said, “without goals and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.” We are trying to build a vibrant and inclusive City for all where young people no matter their background have the ability to dream big and work on making them a reality. Below you will find our 2018 priorities for “FINE District 9” office.

I want to thank everyone for their incredible response to my first blog post, “For such a time as this....” We had over 1500 people read the post about building an #InclusiveDenver, and many of you joined the conversation online. Here's my next piece: "Economic Inclusion." It is inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his prophetic vision for economic justice - which is relevant given Denver’s current Boom.

It’s hard to believe that 2017 is coming to an end. It seems like just yesterday we were setting our Policy and Budget Priorities for the year. 2017 might be over, but we didn’t want you to forget all that we’ve been able to accomplish together. It is always good to reflect about the last year before we move to the next, so in this newsletter edition we’ve highlighted some of the good work happening in the FINE District 9.

38th & Blake Station Area Incentive & RiNo Design Overlay What is It? In 2015, we embarked upon a bold idea in River North Arts District, a Five Points statistical neighborhood. An incentive program that offers higher zoning in exchange for affordable housing, community serving businesses and design standards. We were inspired by other cities that take advantage of density around transit stations.

We are wrapping up our It’s Your City initiative in “Fine” District 9. This summer our office has walked over 10 neighborhoods in our district; knocked on over 1,000 doors; engaged 100’s of individuals on social media; and sent out over 5,000 post cards. Through this initiative we have also received dozens of emails through our website ranging from policy suggestions to maintenance requests.

We are still walking the streets in the FINE District 9, talking to folks about what they feel is important in their neighborhood. Through these conversations we decided to take the conversation in the streets onto social media, and created a survey to get a better sense of people’s understanding of the whole picture. Our goals this year are to make Denver a more inclusive, affordable, safe, and healthy community for all.

We are in our 6th week of hitting the streets in the "FINE" District 9. Our office has been going door to door to educate and engage citizens all over the district about important issues. We are calling it, "It’s Your City". Many times, residents forget they have a voice when it comes to what their city government is doing. As elected leaders and most importantly servant leaders in this great city, we need to hear what our constituents want and need, so that we can do our jobs better. This is truly the brilliance of our democratic society.

Our world, country, state and even Denver are in a very divided time. The social and political climate is tough to stomach at times. I often find myself thinking, has it ever been this bad? And then I remember this is just part of the maturation process of a nation…a people. The hope I have in our current struggle is our call to citizenship, the invitation to get in the battle, not sit back and simply criticize, not just oppose but propose. Our former President Barack Obama said it best as he was leaving office: “For 240 years, our nation's call to citizenship has given work and purpose to each new generation. It's what led patriots to choose republic over tyranny, pioneers to trek west, slaves to brave that makeshift railroad to freedom. It's what pulled immigrants and refugees across oceans and the Rio Grande, pushed women to reach for the ballot, powered workers to organize.

For more than a decade the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has been studying the I-70 East Corridor. During this time CDOT has been working with Globeville, Elyria and Swansea to address the failing viaduct, with the hopes of finding a solution to address the much needed improvements that will make the interstate safer, help relieve traffic congestion and assess the aging infrastructure.
