Today, Denver’s Road Home released the results from an independent assessment of the city’s shelter system. The National Alliance to End Homelessness was contracted by the City & County of Denver through Denver’s Road Home, to assess the quality and capacity of Denver's homeless shelter system, to review shelter practices in other communities, and to make recommendations for improving Denver's shelter programs.

Denver’s Road Home is opening a cold weather emergency overnight shelter for single women tonight at the Minoru Yasui building located at 303 W. Colfax Avenue, in partnership with Volunteers of America. The shelter will provide up to 50 mats and remain open nightly from 6 p.m. – 6 a.m. through April.

Denverite Dr. Nathan O’Neal was bestowed with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. The award is given to individuals who have provided 2,500 or more service hours to the community during their lifetime. O’Neal was honored for his admirable work in helping fathers connect with their children thanks to his work with the Men Behaving Dadly program housed at Denver Human Services (DHS).

The Denver County Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) will officially kick-off the season by hosting a Heating Fair on Thursday, November 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Denver Human Services, 1200 Federal Boulevard. LEAP helps households that qualify by paying a portion of their home heating bills between Nov. 1- April 30.

Denver's Road Home has partnered with Denver Parks & Recreation and Denver Rescue Mission to open an additional cold weather emergency shelter at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center located at 3880 Newport St. This temporary shelter will operate throughout the storm, which is expected to last until Saturday morning to ensure the safety, warmth and well-being of our most vulnerable residents.
