Fact Sheet on DHS Non-Certified Kinship Provider Review Process

On Wednesday, December 17, 2014 the Colorado Department of Human Services released results from their file review of a sampling of non-certified kinship caregivers for counties across the state.

A non-certified kinship caregiver is a relative or person with a significant relationship to the family that has not met the same certification requirements as a foster parent or has chosen not to pursue the process. Non-certified kinship caregivers are required to pass background checks and home inspections.

Earlier this year, DHS identified inconsistencies and discrepancies in the fingerprinting process being utilized for non-certified kinship caregivers. The following are some of the items DHS has already implemented or will be implementing regarding the background check process:

Mayor Hancock, GIVE Denver and Denver Human Services Ask Citizens to Adopt-A-Family or Teen in Need This Holiday

The holidays often present a special challenge for those in need. While every family wants to provide holiday gifts for their child or teen, many are unable to do so because of their economic challenges. Each year, Mayor Michael B. Hancock, GIVE Denver and Denver Human Services host an Adopt-A-Family/Teen Holiday Drive to collect gifts and other donations used to ensure all of Denver’s children, teens and families enjoy the season.

DHS and Denver Juvenile Court Celebrate 46 Adoptions During 10th Annual

The Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse was filled with laughter, joy and a few tears today as 46 Denver children joined 33 permanent adoptive families during Denver’s 10th Annual National Adoption Day event. National Adoption Day is a day to celebrate adoptive families while raising awareness for kids still looking for permanent, loving homes. There are 39 children in the City and County of Denver who are currently awaiting permanent families.

DHS and Denver Juvenile Court Host 10th Annual National Adoption Day Event

Denver Human Services and Denver Juvenile Court are partnering for the tenth annual National Adoption Day event on Friday, November 14 from 9 a.m. until noon. A total of 46 children will be adopted into 33 families as part of Denver’s National Adoption Day event. National Adoption Day is a day to celebrate adoptive families while raising awareness for kids still looking for permanent, loving homes. There are 39 children in the City and County of Denver who are currently awaiting permanent families.

Denver Department of Human Services’ Office of Drug Strategy, in partnership with the Colorado School of Public Health, the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health, and Denver Public Schools, will host a Community Trauma Summit at the Emily Griffith Building in Denver. This event will be attended by numerous local organizations, systems of care, neighborhood groups and families and individuals impacted by trauma.

LEAP Heating Assistance Begins Accepting Applications November 1st

DHS will begin accepting applications from Denver residents for the LEAP program on Saturday, November 1, 2014 through Thursday, April 30, 2015. Both families and individuals may qualify for LEAP.

Denver Department of Human Services to Host 4th Annual GIVE Denver Black and White Masquerade Ball

This weekend, hundreds will gather to give back to GIVE Denver through the 4th Annual GIVE Denver Black and White Masquerade Ball and Silent Auction, presented by Suncor Energy and TIAA-CREF. The annual fundraising event will be held Saturday, October 25 at 7 p.m. at the East DHS office, 3815 Steele St.

Funds received through the annual event go directly to the GIVE Denver Center, a human services program that provides foster children, the homeless and other families in need with basic necessities when they do not have their full needs met through DHS’ regular assistance programs.
