Paying online?

The City of Denver recently implemented a security enhancement to better protect our online payment processing system.  As a result of this enhancement, we are no longer able to accept payments from non-current browsers. If you are using an older browser version, please upgrade your browser to the most current version so that you can access the online payment service.

2017 PREPAYMENT FAQ

If you prepaid your 2017 property taxes before December 31, 2017, your receipt will be mailed to you approximately the 4th week of January.  You will also receive your 2017 Tax Statement in the mail about the same time which will NOT reflect the pre-payment.

The City and County of Denver will not be processing any refunds of prepaid property taxes, unless the amount paid exceeded the total assessed amount.  If you prepaid your 2017 property taxes and your mortgage lender escrows your taxes and pays us directly, you will need to contact your mortgage lender to prevent a duplicate payment by them and to discuss any options regarding adjustments to your escrow accounts and/or monthly mortgage payments.  Again, it’s important to check with your lender.  If the lender is not contacted and they also pay the taxes from escrow, the refund will be issued to the lender, not the homeowner.

The Denver Department of Finance, as a practice, does not dispense tax or legal advice to taxpayers. For questions about whether the Internal Revenue Service will allow taxpayers to deduct 2017 property taxes on their 2017 taxes, we suggest contacting the IRS directly or consulting a tax accountant or attorney.

As for the taxpayers who contacted our office late last year to pre-pay their 2017 property tax bill before their statement was mailed in January, Treasury employees followed standard property tax process, as outlined in the Colorado Revised Statutes.

Our system can accept early payments should a taxpayer want to pay their taxes early, and some do each year. This is true in jurisdictions across the state of Colorado.
